    dBridge

It seems like only last week we were discussing the last time these two got together and they’re back again with dBridge’s new Velvit monikor providing the second release for Jon Convex’s “Convex Industries” imprint.

First track “Passing Encounter” recalls classic drum n bass while maintaining a modern production edge while “Scarlett” on the flip is a lovely slab of 4/4 darkness driven by a classic bit of reece bass.

With dj support from the likes of Jimmy Edgar, Martyn, Benji B and more, this one’s sure to do well and you can snap up a copy of your own at the Convex Industries Surus shop.

    Luke Abbott

It’s fair to say that Holkham Drones by Luke Abbott has been one of the stand out albums in the last 2 years. Sublime production matched with beautifully constructed tunes have made it a Labs favourite. Well he is back with a new EP on Notown in the next few days.

We have the title track for you to check out and we are all keeping pur fingers crossed that another album isn’t too far away.

GoldFFinch to release EP on Audio Culture

    GoldFFinch

Hot on the heels of their 2 EP series release in Saigon Recordings, GoldFFinch are back with a new release on Audio Culture. Skittering percussion, soulful chopped vocals and an overall techy feel to the EP make it one that certainly hits the mark.

Due to drop in June, this further cements GoldFFinch as a production team with the bit between their teeth. We are looking forward to hearing more from them later in the year.

This Friday, 18th of May sees us kick off our new monthly residency at The Art School in Glasgow.

The third Friday of each month will see us take to the turntables in the bar from 8PM till midnight with a selection of pub friendly funk, soul, hip hop, house and more with the tunes leaning more towards the dancefloor as we approach midnight.

There’s a Facebook event thang for you to sign up to and here’s our latest mix to give you an idea of what to expect from the later hours of the evening.

Here’s a wee sprinkling of the type of tunes you can expect to accompany those early pints.

    Nautiluss – Alpha EP

    NAUTILUSS

Canadian label Turbo Recordings are going through a good run of form at the moment with some quality releases due to drop in the coming months. Their next offering come from Canadian producer Nautiluss. Formally part of electro pop outfit Thunderheist Graham Zilla has now moved into the techno world with ease.

The 4 track EP has UK bass flavours intertwined with a techno framework that oozes the type of quality that was displayed on his previous release on Hemlock.

I’ve picked out 2 of my favourites to tick you over until its landing date at the start of June.

    Phon.o – Black Boulder

    phon_o

German producer Phon.o has dub running through his veins. His production style, while always varied, has the dub DNA to hold everything together. His new album “Black Boulder” however moves away from that style to become a far more eclectic affair.

There is of course dub in there but it sits along side techno, house, funky as well as electronica and all manner of yet un-named sub genres. One thing that remains unchanged however for this new record, due out at the end of the month on 50 Weapons, is the head bursting production.

I have listened to many electronic albums in the last few months that have been of a average quality, they lacked soul and the hooks required to draw you in further. This is a criticism that can’t be aimed at “Black Bolder” as it gets better and better with every listen.

Set for release on the 18th of May and available from Boomkat.

Four Tet heads to Jupiter and remixes Neneh Cherry

    Four Tet

We can count on one hand the amount of material to come of Four Tet’s studio that was less than amazing, so any new updates to his Soundcloud always guarantee our attention.

He recently unveiled the first track from the forthcoming 15th release on his Text imprint and as always it deserves your time. It’s a lovely sparkly slice of electronica with a head nodder of a bassline and a synthline that worms its way into your consciousness after one airing.

No release date as yet but you can also check out the flip “Ocaras” over at listenbeforeyoubuy.

As an added bonus, this new remix has appeared for Neneh Cherry’s new project and it’s a lovely slab of dubby house that shifts its shape several times throughout its near 9 minute duration.

The original appears on the “The Cherry Thing” album landing in June with no confirmed release date for the remix as yet.

    Modeselektion vol 2

Those cheeky monkeys are back with another menagerie of bleeps, blips, stabs and swooshes as we welcome the 2nd in the Modeselektion series on Monkeytown. As with the first one, they have gathered previously unreleased tracks from a wide range of producers from their labels and as always a couple of sneaky tunes in there for good measure.

We have picked out a few of out favourites from the 16 tracker including jams from Martyn, Dark Sky, Egyptrixx and Bambounou.

Set for release on June 29th.

    The Future Sound of London

The past five years has seen a huge amount of brilliant unreleased Future Sound of London material made available through the “From The Archives” and “Environments” series.

The latest in the latter has just arrived and expectations were high due to the bar set by previous outings.

As usual there’s the quality blend of otherworldly atmospherics, insteresting instrumentation, floaty ambience and the odd beat driven interlude that marks this as another must have for fans of FSOL and electronic music in general.

Available now from the FSOL shop.

Spanky Wilson – Sunshine Of Your Love

    Spanky Wilson

As funk, soul and disco Saturday rolls on again we once again celebrate all that’s great from the past 40 years. To not have featured Spanky Wilson up until now may be a bit of a crime but that mistake has now been put right.

Performing since the late 60s she has shared a stage with many of the great soul, funk and jazz artists. She has many songs that I could have chosen from and of course has performed with the Quantic Soul Orchestra on numerous occasions throughout the 2000s but “Sunshine Of Your Love” always hits the spot.
