Trills (aka Jonathan Jindra) got in touch with us here at the Phuturelabs after I recently featured the Midmir album “Step Into A Dream” which he collaboratively wrote and produced with Frank Dambra (Arctier, Track53).

Trills own album “Modular Puzzle” is due for release on the 31st of january on the I, Absentee label. Artwork duties for the album have been carried out by Joe Bastardo. Initially only available as a physical copy I recommend you grab one before they’re all gone!

The album itself is genre defeating. I honestly don’t know what i would call it- but it IS brilliant. From ambient downtempo numbers to glitchy acid techno (and everything in between) it’s an epic album.

Tracks such as “Flavia” & “Paragon” are reminiscent of Boards of Canada, while “Purple Triangle” actually reminds me of a breaks track by Phuturelabs very own Paul Reset! Other tracks, such as “Erawitt” and the opener “Zurich” are heavy doomy futuristic numbers.

I did a bit of research and discovered that the album had taken two and a half years to complete- so I got in touch to ask him why & asked him a few other questions while i was it…….

Kieran (PL)- “How would you describe the album?”

Trills- “Stylistically it’s a bit hard to define. The beats are sometimes linear, but other times sound more like a hose spraying water on a window.”

Kieran (PL) – “What were you trying to acheive with it?”

Trills- “Modular Puzzle is partly my reaction to being pegged as a purely ambient artist, when that was far from what I perceived myself to be. I felt it necessary to sacrifice a certain amount of coziness that people may be accustomed to in order to push it into something sonically ambitious.
I grew up loving the sound of loud guitars and swirling pinnacles of noise, so it’s an attempt to really converge the music I hear within my mind with the paradigm technology has created for producers of modern electronic music.”

Kieran (PL) – “Why did it take 2 and half years to complete!!?”

Trills- “The cd took a little over two years to complete because it took that long to discover that new pathway of creation…that and my wife and I had our first son, so for a few months I had to readjust to that lifestyle before I could get back in the flow of music making!”

Thanks to Trills for answering some questions for us!

There’s a total of 12 tracks on the album- i’ve selected two to give you an idea…..but i would really recommend you pick up a copy and listen to it in it’s entirety.

As an added bonus Trills has taken some fragments from his live set and combined them with sounds from “Modular Puzzle” and added some new movements to it to produce a Phuturelabs exclusive track entitled “Bia Lola (Phuturelabs Mix)“.
An absolutely slamming doom laden 6 minute track which can only hint at his performances during live shows….. check him out if you can!
