James Holden - Dj Kicks - artwork

June 2010 sees !K7′s Dj Kicks presents one of the best mixes in it’s entire series. It’s James Holden at the controls and it’s an amazing mix of electronica, techno, house and some other bits and bobs – all blended perfectly by Holden and the whole mix has a kinda shoegazey type feel to it – almost ethereal and otherworldly.

Packed with peaks and troughs a-plenty, it’s a cracker. With tracks from the likes of Caribou, James Ruskin and Legowelt, the tracklisting also includes two exclusive Holden tracks – the first being his unreleased mix of Mogwai’s “The Sun Smells Too Loud” and the second being his first new track in four years – “Triangle Holds”. Check out the new track below and get yourself along to your fave retailer on June 7th to pick up this brilliant mix.

Carl Craig – At Les (Christian Smith remixes)

    Carl Craig

It’s not too often that one of Carl Craig’s many classics gets a remix that actually improves on the original. Both of Christian Smith’s remixes do that job right here.

Keeping the warmth and depth of the original fully intact and sprucing up the drum work and percussion, it’s the Tronic Treatment mix for me – knee deep in atmosphere and with lush pads and strings a-plenty, it’s 9 minutes of your life that you definitely won’t want back.

    James Blake – CMYK

    James Blake
is a very talented lad. Currently studying music at Goldsmiths in London he has releases and remixes on both Hemlock and Hessle. In between that he makes up part of the Mount Kimbie live set up. He now has a release “CMYK” coming out at the end of May on the mighty R&S label.

The theme throughout the EP is warped soulful vocals, stuttering percussive beats and cracking synth work. Blake has the ability to paint light and shade into all his productions and this EP is no exception. The title track is the standout for me which you can hear below. One of essential plates to come out this year. You will be able to pick this on the 31st May from Boomkat.

Quick post for Saturday morning. I was reminded by a tweet from Gilles Peterson what an amazing tune the Mosca remix of Four Tet’s “Sing” is so thought we should stick it up. Any excuse for some more Four Tet I say!

Just over a week ago we shared an excellent mix of all Cómeme records by Glasgow DJ Brian D’Souza. Well this Friday new night Highlife welcomes Capracara to get the place kicking off. We thought that anyone who won’t be there should checkout his set from last year as part of the last Cómeme tour.

We also thought you may want to check out the amazing remix of “King Of Witches” by Rub ‘N’ Tug taking in a more disco vibe.

The Art Of Noise – Close (To The Edit)

Like buses, you wait ages for The Art of Noise to turn up then two come along in a row. Paul gave me inspiration last week with his Prodigy remix and so this week my Friday classic is for me the best Art Of Noise tune around “Close (To The Edit)”.

Released in 1984 in various versions, this track was an update on the earlier Hip Hop beat tune “Beatbox”. It samples the band Yes as well as a car starting and stopping. These combined with great synth work and vocal samples created a tune boogie boys and body poppers alike. Get those windmills on the go.
