    Scuba - EQTV - Chambre 69

There is much love for Scuba at Phuturelabs. His productions under both his own name as well as SCB are always top quality. Lets not forget, however that he (Paul Rose) also runs one of our favourite labels (more of that later!). He also recently curated a DJ Kicks mix for !K7 which is on repeat in the headphone at the moment.

When we got new he was coming to Glasgow, the excitement was palpable. The guys bringing him to the city are the brains behind the amazing video lead site EQTV. If you haven’t checked it out yet, we highly recommend you do as its crammed full of amazing club videos and interviews with more top DJ’s than I care to mention.

They have lined up the excellent new venue Chambre 69 for the evening of the 9th for what is sure to be an outstanding party. For the chance to win two tickets just send an e mail to competitions@phuturelabs.com with Scuba in the title and answer the following question.

“What is the name of Scuba’s record label?”

    EQTV - Scuba

Check out the excellent promo video below and also click on the Facebook page for further details of the evening. You can also click here for ticket sales as you don’t want to miss out.

While we are at it, pin your ears to this excellent mix from Sonar this year courtesy of the guys at Warm.

    Andy Meecham

It’s such a great idea for an album that it’s amazing it’s never been done before. Take a series of classic synths and record an albums worth of material using one synth per track.

The man that’s finally brought the idea to reality is Andy Meecham, also known as one of the producers behind old skoolers Bizarre Inc and big beat producers extraordinaire Chicken Lips.

Over the 9 tracks, he works his magic on some of the best synths ever built and constructs some quality electronica that surprisingly manages to avoid sounding dated..

Grab his Yamaha CS15 track below and pop on over to Juno to pick up the rest.

The last time Jack Dixon popped up on the Labs turntables was the brilliant “Decade EP” on TAKE. This time he’s got Rick Grant in tow and it’s George FitzGerald’s new label Man Make Music that plays host.

The title track is a lovely slab of house goodness with skippy percussion a-plenty and uplifting chords floating around a minimal vocal. Second track “Muted” is the one for me however with it’s melancholy pads and garage style hi-hats wrapping themselves a pitched down vocal and bass so warm it could melt an igloo.

There’s also a Kevin McPhee remix thrown in for good measure and you can pick this up now at the MMM shop at Surus.

    Throwing Snow – Pyre/Equuleus/Too Polite

    Throwing Snow

Despite being only eight releases deep into their discography, Local Action have made every release count and have swiftly marked themselves out as a must buy label.

London lad Throwing Snow steps up next for the label’s 9th release (8th on the catalogue number though just to mess with your head) and maintains the imprint’s high quality standards.

Spread over three tracks, the EP eases itself in with the first two tracks, “Pyre” and “Equuleus”.

The opener combines snippets of chipmunked vox with ethereal pads and some great percussion that sits perfectly in the mix while the second track slowly nudges proceedings upwards slightly and shares the melancholy feel of the opener.

The real treat however is in closing track “Too Polite”, it’s so much of a monster that each copy should come with a free cage.

Basically we’re looking at a reese bassline monster that equals the classic “Lokuste” for impact, albeit at a much friendlier tempo.

If you’re lucky enough to snag a copy from the first run of 12″ vinyl you’ll also get a CDR of Local Action exclusives thrown in for good measure. So head on over to Boomkat and get your buy fingers at the ready

    Howie B

Glasgow born producer Howie B has a list of production credits that place him behind the desk for some of the world’s biggest acts. His finest moment for me however was debut album “Turn The Dark Off”.

Howie B – Fizzy In My Mouth / Your Mouth

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

It’s a brilliant piece of work that managed to capture its place in time but also avoid any cliches that would have dated it badly. Packed with phenomenal drum work and catchy melodies, a smoky atmosphere hangs over the whole thing and it’s perfect Sunday listening.

Probably best played in that early evening spot where you’re considering going out for that pint to see you into Monday.

    Howie B – Who’s Got The Bacon?

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

If you’d like a longer slab of Howie then grab this brilliant BBC Essential Mix from the man himself, originally broadcast in 1996.

Every Saturday we take a look at some quality funk, soul and disco here at the Labs. Wether it be old or new, we’re into it and want to share it with yourselves.

To kick things off we’ve got a lovely slab of Glasgow funk courtesy of Starla Records. A regular fix in any Phuturelabs pub set, it’s a bit ol’ chunk of shuffly goodness courtesy of The DT6 that will hopefully inspire a dance craze to rival The Slosh.

Released last year, you can still pick up this badboy on vinyl over at the Starla blog.

Jody Watley - I'm The One You Need (Dead Zone) - vinyl label

I was reminded of this tune by a friend this week, if you were around when it came out it will no doubt bring back fond memories of cutting some serious rug.

Jody Watley is a multi talented lady. With a career spanning 25 years, this singer, song writer and producer has worked with too many to mention and has had a myriad of hit singles and albums. She could deliver pop, RnB, soul and dance music with ease. She also had a eye for remix talent.

The pick of her bunch was the Dead Zone version which was produced by David Morales and made many a mix by the biggest DJ’s at the time

Radiohead – Bloom (Jamie XX remix part 3)

    Jamie XX

I have to admit to being a little underwhelmed with the Jamie XX rework of Radiohead’s “Bloom” that made the vinyl release back in September.

If you too shared the disappointment then fear not, it appears he worked on a few remixes of the track and they’ve finally let one of them out the bag. Available as a download only, it’s a lovely chilled house remix that sprinkles some plinkly plonky chimes over a spacey 4/4 backing.

Also tucked away in this wee bonus remix pack are extra reworks from Anstam and Nathan Fake and you can give them a listen over at the Radiohead Soundcloud.

Pick this up now at the Dead Air Space store. Now, where’s part 2?

    Guy Andrews - Shades/Textures - Hemlock

Guy Andrews first hit our radar after a feature in XLR8R. Soon after that the Brighton bass producer has a 4 track debut on Discobelle. Such is the hype around Guy that he quickly followed that up with an exclusive interview and mix for Dummy Mag.

What is it about his music that has gathered such early plaudits? His productions can be as stark as they are deep. Heavy use of drum samples, cross genre beat runs with influences from right across the spectrum mean there is always something quirky and interesting on the ear. Make no mistake though, his tunes are made to dance to, which is ultimately the name of the game.

Check out his new 12′ for Hemlock which you can pick up right now from Boomkat.

    Joker

Joker’s debut album “The Vision” on 4AD was a great piece of work but I personally could have done without the vocals. Thankfully you can get instrumentals of all the vocal tracks on a special download only version.

One such track is the new single “On Your Mind” and 4AD have kindly offered up the instrumental version as a free download.

The single comes bundled with remixes from Goldie and Rustie and lands on December 5th but for now, get into some skippy dubstep goodness sans vox.
