    2662 - Fever - When in Doubt

The long awaited concept album by 2562 has finally dropped. When the album was first touted, we were told it was entirely constructed from disco samples from the 70′s and 80′s. This is in fact true but you would be hard pushed to find any Earth Wind & Fire in there. What we have instead is an album of slashes and cuts, drop and bends. Every conceivable trick has been used to construct and manipulate the sounds that you hear.

Sometime it seems just busy with no apparent framework and at other points it leaves you in awe of its construction. We have jungle, garage, house, techno and various other pigeonholes scattered through the soundscape. It is a true masterpiece that will no doubt last the test of time in the modern world of disposable music. Thanks to the man himself you can stream clips for all the tracks below but why not just pick it at at Boomkat or all the other usual outlets.

Mark System – Hold It EP

System - photo by Paul Oakley Photography

Having first appeared on the drum n bass scene as an MC, Mark System has steadily built up his reputation as a producer with tracks like “Near Miss” picking up across the board DJ support. Recent releases for Exit showed a diversity of his production and this four tracker for Digital Soundboy is sure to push him further into the spotlight.

From the tough dancefloor beats of the title track through to the closer “Love Dub” with it’s snappy breaks and sub bass packed drop, it’s quality all the way. Second track “Tension” is my pick of the bunch however with it’s half time drums and eerie atmospherics. Check out the minimix below for a preview of all four tracks.

    Released 18th April.

    Daedelus - Tailor-Made - artwork

Following releases on such respected imprints as Warp, Brainfeeder and Stones Throw, April 11th will see Daedelus unleash his next full length album project “Bespoke” on the mighty Ninja Tune.

New single “Tailor Made” gives us a final taster of what to expect on the album and despite the original impressing, it’s the Floating Points remix that blew us away. Taking the energetic feel of the original and slowing things down to a mild saunter, it instantly conjures up images of smoke filled jazz bars and welcomes you into it’s warm fold with open arms.

Available now at the Ninja Tune shop.

    Monster Munch

Its seems only a couple of days ago since the first Saturday Snack was consumed and yet here we are again for round 2. This time I’m hitting up the Monster Munch, which of course has to be pickled onion and old size. I’m sticking to one bag today as we have loads of new and interesting tunes to get through.

First up we have Phreek Plus One, who to celebrate the release of their album “Phreek Party” on Compost are sticking this funky soulful freebie out and about. To check more of the album, check out the Soundcloud page.

Phreek Plus One – True (I Know It) ft. Ovasoul7 by compost

We heard recently that good friend of the blog Sinden was getting the big man Krystal Klear to disco up his and The Count’s tune “After Dark” which they did with the Mystery Jets. We though it would be rude not to share the results.

Pictures Music have taken a left turn for the next release on the label. Leaving the bass music behind they are heading down a more electronica route with Lapalux. The EP “Faces Out Of Focus” is brimming with ideas, samples and moods, all mashed up together into a rather nice package. Get the free download below to get a hint of what’s in store.

We covered this the Auntie Flo EP a few weeks ago and since then the hype has continued with great reviews across various publications. Then they kindly give one of the tunes away for free. Dig in with a big thanks to Huntleys & Palmers.

Next up we’ve got the solo single from Jess Mills. She recently featured on Breakage’s “Fighting Fire” and he’s returned the favour by producing her first single – have a gander.

Hotflush is one of our favourite labels around, so when they announced a 2 CD compilation we awaited the results eagerly. What you get in the package is a disc of previous releases of the highest quality, many including Untold, Joy Orbison and Scuba will be favourites already. The second disc brings the new bizness and included artists such as Roska and Sepalcure. You can get a sample of both discs below as well as a free download from Boddika via the widget.

Rhythim is Rhythim - Strings of Life - UR

It doesn’t get any better that this with Derrick May releasing this tune under his Rhythim is Rhythim alias in 1987. With its DNA firmly in the Belleville camp, rumour has it that it was actually Frankie Knuckles that came up with the name. A trail blazing tune that will destroy any dance floor to passes over. Its all about the strings!

Redinho - Edge Off - Numbers

With the Numbers crew just back from their month long tour of the US taking clubs like Low End Theory and TURRBOTAX® by storm you would think they would be having a rest on the EP front. Not so for the Glasgow juggernaut with the release of a new Redinho EP hot on the heels of the Deadboy release that’s about to drop.

Tile track “Edge Off”, a surprising monster of a funk electro boogie track makes big start to the EP. We then get into more familiar beats and blips territory with the track “Slap” before the last track “Whips” up the pace and drives hard to the end.

The evening of Sunday 1st August last year saw the Phuturelabs collective wander freely into the world of the Electric Frog Street Carnival at the SWG3 in Glasgow. We caught such delights as Cottam, Felix Da Housecat, Liquid Liquid, Simian Mobile Disco and also spent an unusual amount of time just kicking around talking to folk, ya know, like the old days. Here’s a wee taster of last years madness below thanks to EQTV.

    Burial – Street Halo EP

Burial - Street Halo EP - artwork

While the recent collabs with Four Tet have kept our Burial addiction at bay, nothing feeds it more than solo material from the London producer. This new three tracker of epic beats picks up the unlucky for some catalogue number of 13 on Hyperdub.

The title track opens proceedings and is a bit of a pacier number than Burial’s known for while the second track and our pick of the bunch “NYC” is packed with the familiar eerie atmosphere and edgy vocal interludes. “Stolen Dog” closes the EP and lands somewhere in the middle but only lead me back to listen to the stand out second track.

Available on 12″ now at Rubadub and available digitally from the 18th of April.
