    Danny Byrd

Danny Byrd’s recent “Ravedigger” album has been causing quite a stir with it’s old skool style take on modern dnb and the next single from the project sees garage don MJ Cole step up to the remix desk.

Stripping back the BPMs to just over 130, Cole retains the energy of the original and keeps the floaty atmospherics intact while throwing his trademark big bass work into the mix and working a huge synth line around proceedings.

Released on the 24th of January 2011 through Hospital Records.

Harvey McKay - Substanz Underground EP - artwork

While 2010 has been another great year for Soma, their 2011 campaign is already building up speed. The first release next year will be a new EP from Harvey McKay in the shape of “Substanz Underground”.

Set to land on the 10th of January, the EP’s lead track “B Class” sees McKay in fine form, delivering a moody slice of quality techno. The title track also gets a nifty remix from Jon Virtue but it’s the closing track on the EP “Mind Frame” that really got our attention.

Keeping his trademark dark n doomy vibe intact, the inclusion of some old skool rave style stabs fighting through the wall of sub bass add a little light and shade to proceedings and mark the track out as one of his finest to date.

Available to pre-order now from the Soma Shop.

    Shackleton - Fabric 55 - artwork

While Shackleton’s productions are often lumped into the dubstep genre, as with many producers these days, that description only tells a small part of the story.

His new Dj mix for Fabric sees him cram in 22 tracks in it’s 70+ minute duration and leaves you feeling slightly on edge and unsure of exactly what just happened as the tracks conjure up an otherworldly atmosphere and subtly freak you out while also retaining a dancefloor groove.

More than half of the tracks are unreleased and showcases an impressive library of new material which we’ll hopefully be able to get our grubby mits on soon. For a starter, the brilliant “International Fires” is available to download for free and should send you rushing over to your retailer of choice to pick up the full mix.

Free download courtesy of XLR8R. Pick up Shackleton’s Fabric 55 mix at Boomkat.

    Snowy landscape

Having said goodbye to the good old Roast, we move things on for our Sunday feature and bring you Lazy Sundays. It’s aim is to relax and chill you out after the rigors of a hard week at work and hopefully a busy weekend on the dancefloor. We will bring you the best new electronica and ambient tunes as well as allowing us to delve into some older tracks and hidden album classics from time gone by.

First up we have oOoOO and a remix of the Marina and the Diamonds tune “Obsessions”. The San Fran leaders of the “witch house” sound turn this pop tune into a brooding, emotional slice of electronica. So much better than the original we think!

Marina and the Diamonds – Obsessions (oOoOO Remix)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Next we have Telefon Tel Aviv. After the tragic passing of one half of the duo (Charlie Cooper) last year no one was sure if the name would continue. It wasn’t until Apparat was putting together his DJ Kicks for !K7 that Joshua Eustis decided to make the track “Lengthening Shadows” for the mix. The song is so poignant one can’t helped be moved by the story and the subtle emotion held within.

Finishing up this week’s offerings we’ve got a freebie from Glasgow producer Velocet. Packed to the brim with atmosphere, it’s 7 minutes of lovely downtempo beats with beautiful strings a-plenty.

Having been very lazy on the mix front and being shown up by the number Paul has been doing, it’s time for me to get a wee mix series on the go.

Not having as much time as I would like, the name for the series came very quickly (some of the mixing also testified to this!!). They will be a mix of styles and in a more manageable 30 odd minutes in length. First one is flavoured with house, funky and electronica.

    Hard Ass Sessions Vol IV

Hard Ass Sessions Vol 4 - artwork

Buraka Som Sistema’s Enchufada imprint has been on fine form this year with two volumes of it’s Hard Ass Sessions series packed with top quality beats from the likes of Bok Bok and Melé while T Williams made his debut for the label with the brilliant “Getting Mine”. To bring 2010 to close, the fourth volume in the Hard Ass Sessions lands on December 7th.

The bar’s set high from the off with Martelo and Canblaster’s “Cannibal” bursting in with tribal percussion, huge sub bass and an epic string hook. Dubbel Dutch is up next with “Dead Pool” and it’s the pick of the bunch for me. Taking a slightly calmer approach than the opener, we’re delived a dubby slice of garagey goodness with subtle synth work and a bit of an old skool feel throughout.

Seiji’s up next with “Buzzcut” and it’s more of his trademark tough drums and high pitched stabby synth line while Savage Skulls & French Fries finish the EP off in a similar vein with “Marawa”.

Available from Dec 7th at Junodownload.
