    Ramadanman & Appleblim – Void 23

    Ramadanman & Appleblim - Void 23 - artwork

Ramadanman is a name that pops up again and again here on the Labs and he’s a producer that consistently delivers quality with no exception. Combine this with the fact that this is released on Will Saul’s brilliant Aus Music label and you’re onto a guaranteed winner.

“Void 23″ takes a fairly minimal techno backing and dips it in a big bath of dubbed out effects while underpinning the whole thing with a almost constantly evolving bassline, moving from a moody hook in the first half of the track into an almost cheery melodic lead in the second. The track has a very live dub feel with sounds wandering in and out of the mix while a fuzzy earworm of a little synth hook remains consistent throughout.

Detroit legend Carl Craig has been starting his sets with this of late and on the flip he turns in a rather tasty re-edit. While it gives the track a slightly more dancefloor edge, I feel it loses a little of the atmosphere and depth of the brilliant original.

    Available from November 22nd.

Piece of Shh – Diablo Riddim (Hektagon’s Shuffle)

    Piece of Shh

Serbian producer Goran Simonoski AKA Piece of Shh has been carving a name for himself in the country’s electronica scene since the early 2000s with his show on the B92 radio station and involvement in the renowned Dis-patch festival. On the production side of things he recently released “Words, Breaths and Pauses” as part of Cheap And Deep duo and received support from the likes of Josh Wink, Laurent Garnier and DJ Hell.

His latest outing is a solo release on new label Svetlana Industries. Despite only being the third release on the imprint, they’ve already landed with a bit of a bang after impressive output from Ramadanman and Teebs. The original version of “Diablo Riddim” is best described as a lovely manky piece of dubstep influenced electronica. Overflowing with crunchy synth work, melancholy atmospherics, dirty drums and waves of sub bass, it’s the kind of track you wouldn’t want to bump into in a dark alley on a Saturday night.

To compliment the original, the label have lined up some top quality remixes. First up is Zomby with his stripped back mix, taking some of the weight from the track and replacing it with some 303 goodness. The Hektagon remix however is the stand out track of the package for me. I hadn’t heard any of Hektagon’s work before but will certainly be keeping my eyes peeled in the future. Taking the wandering synth work of the original, streamlining it slightly and pouring it over a very polished slice of dubstep, it’s packed wall to wall with a nice subtle groove that helps to enhance the lovely atmospherics from the original.

Available now on 12″ with a digital release to follow on the 22nd of November. Order at Svetlana’s online shop.

Sunday Roast – Best of the Rest

Its lamb all the way this week in what will be one of our last Sunday roasts as we change things up in the coming months. Cook it up here and keep your eyes peeled for developments.

New label somethinksounds are about to release their inaugural EP into the world and have chosen new producer Eliphino to kick things off. The EP sounds familiar but also has a strange distant quality to the vocal. Beautiful synth arrangements and simple sharp beats suggest that there is more to come from this producer. We have a freebie to boot but get this on the 29th November when it hits the streets.

Caribou has just released the “Swim” remix album and its filled with quality tracks from start to finish. We already brought the MCDE mix of “Leave Home”. We now have the Midland edit of the anthem “Sun”where he goes towards a more house feel. Lots of echo and effects give this tune even more amazing presence and atmosphere than the original. Its been getting played in the Labs daily. Enjoy!

The late entry to the party today is from Rickazoid with a massive dose of future electro funk. Taken right out a late 70′s si-fi film but still as fresh as a daisy! Synth runs, boom blap beats and funk to burn. This is out now on All City Records and you can also help yourself to loads of Ruckazoid freebies at Listen + Compute.

Numan - Race Against Time EP - artwork

Planet Mu continues to use it’s considerable status to bring new producers to the forefront and the next in line is Numan. He first appeared on our radar with the impressive “Skull Crusher” for Starkey’s Slit Jockey imprint and this four track for the Mu shows the depth of variety available within his output.

The title track opens the EP with a tribal rhythm section underpinning several haunting melodies that seem to float around each other, each taking it’s own turn in the spotlight with the lead accordian-esque line wandering to the front again and again. Second track “Photograph” is my fave of the bunch. Taking a more melancholy turn, fusing light droning synth work with a snappy garagey break with the camera click taking the place of the snare.

Next up is “Voodoo” and we’re in percussive workout territory here with it’s fuzzy bass and old skool style female vocal chant simmering throughout over unsettling strings. To finish up the EP, we drift onto “XX”. Perhaps the most straightforward dancefloor track on the EP with it’s sparse drum work surrounded by 8 bit sounds and hooks.

All in all it’s an inspiring piece of work that marks Numan out as a name to watch for 2011.

    Available now at Boomkat.

    4 Hero – Les Fleur

    4 Hero - Les Fleur - artwork

I was a huge fan of 4 Hero’s early jungle and breakbeat work but personally wasn’t hugely taken with their smoother/jazzier material. This track however jumps out from their 2001 “Creating Patterns” album and never fails to bring a smile to my face and a lump to my throat.

Minnie Riperton of course was the first to record the track, and as timeless as it is, I could never get enough of 4 Hero’s cover and Carina Andersson’s brilliant vocal. Adding their unique polish and upping the epic factor even more with an abundance of strings and atmospherics, it’s hard to find words to describe just how uplifting the track’s crescendo’s and breakdowns are.

Lie back, close your eyes, turn up the volume and let the track wash over you. It doesn’t really get much better.

Untold - System Freeze - artwork

Despite being one of the longest running labels in the history of electronic music, 2010 has arguably been one of the the strongest years in R&S’s history. The label has released new material from the legendary Model 500, taken new talent on board such as James Blake and Pariah and their next release sees Untold join the family.

As co-owner of Hemlock and with releases under his belt for Hotflush, Hessle Audio and Soul Jazz, Untold has an impressive back catalogue, it seems however that he’s saved some of his best work yet for R&S.

The lead track on the 12 – “System Freeze” is the standout for me here. Charging in with monstrous amounts of sub bass and metallic handclaps while working it’s way up to a short n snappy synth hook that sits atop proceedings before calm is restored temporarily half way through. The second half of the track piles on some eerie melodies while the crunchy breaks pound along beneath.

As with his previous work, the track has a thoroughly epic feel that makes it feel much longer than it’s 6 minute duration. Quality stuff and hopefully just the tip of the iceberg of his work for the label.

Released 8th November on 12″ and 22nd November digitally.

    T. Williams – Getting Mine

    T Williams

    T. Williams is another producer that’s built up an impressive catalogue of releases throughout 2010. His releases on Local Action and Deep Teknologi have been firm favourites on the playlist at the Labs and “Getting Mine” for Buraka Som Sistema’s new imprint Enchufada is sure to join them. It’s a bit of a banger with it’s intense high pitched synth line leading the charge ably aided and abetted by pounding drums and heavy percussion. The flip sees the Drumstrumental version stripping back the synth work and destroying more drum skins in the process.

Released on November 15th and it’ll be available at Junodownload.

Hatikvah - Spend Some Time - artwork

Hatikvah’s recent “Synchronicity” album for Soma was packed with quality dub techno and now it’s time for the remixers to get to work. Silicone Soul are the first to step up to the oche and they’ve taken a pop at “Spend Some Time”.

We’re in fairly deep house territory here with an infectious bassline that’s prominent right from the off. Using the vocals sparingly throughout, there’s an ethereal atmosphere running through the track with it’s haunting guitar notes strung out over a moody backing.

It’s a cracking remix and released November 15th. Available to pre-order now at the Soma Shop.

    A belter of a beard

After harnessing the beard power for volumes 1 and 2, I decided that it may be time for me to grow the beard back. The shavings I discovered in the jar which provided the power for Vol 2 are running a little low. and as we’re approaching Decembeard it may be the time.

Anyway, have a wee listen below to the third in the Beardism volume, while I scour the web for further beard inspiration. Stream below or download for portable listening.
