    Green Velvet - Flash remixes

One of the biggest techno tracks of all time gets the remix treatment as we edge towards the end of 2010. Green Velvet’s classic needs no introduction and while remixes from The Advent vs Industrialyzer, Channel X and more do an adequate job of updating the track slightly, it’s the Jamie Jones remix that really stands out from the pack.

Taking the spirit of the original track, calming things down a little and sprinkling an ounce of funk over proceedings, it’s a brilliant rework and sure to be working it’s way into many a NYE set.

    Available now at Beatport.

    Hissy Fit – Top 10 of 2010

We asked our man Hissy Fit to give us his take on 2010 and he has given us a stellar selection of beats to get into. He also has a new EP out now on Swing and Skip called “Berry”. You can pick the whole thing up here and also grab the “Berry Dubby Dub” tune below.

Hissy Fit – Berry Dubby Dub

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Now onto his favourite beats from the year….

    Hissy Fit – Top 10 of 2010

    1. Harmonic 313 feat. Wiley – Scar

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

This song is just so good. That bassline is just so perfect and Wiley is as reliable as ever. I’m hoping grime will replace brostep as the aggro music of choice on dancefloors in 2011.

    2. Hot City – Another Girl

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Big obvious tune – the type of thing some producers would slag off then secretly try to recreate. It just bursts out of the speakers.

    3. Joy Orbison – Ladywell

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Joy Orbison in good tune non-shocker! Not much like his old stuff but every bit as good.

    4. James Blake – Postpone

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Beautiful tune. Some day everybody’s going to realise James Blake doesn’t make dance music, but until that point, fill yer boots!

    5. Rusko – Woo Boost (subskrpt edit)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

A Rusko song, oh no! The original is just plod-plod-plod but this mix really bounces – it’s a good brash counterpoint to Another Girl.

    6. MJ Cole – Thekla Rhythm

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

This whole release is great, but this track, of sharp rhythms and techno sounds, is the pick of the litter.

    7. Jacques Greene – (Baby I Don’t Know) What You Want

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Jacques Greene might be Montreal’s best producer and this is probably his best track. I just wish he’d play some gigs in Montreal as Jacques Greene instead of – or in addition to – his other names.

    8. Skinny Bones – Road to Axum

    Road to Axum by skinnybones

Skinnybones is part of Montreal’s ESL Collective. I once asked ESL’s Bowly what Skinnybones’ productions were like and he said “Percussive!” I said “Can you be more specific?” and he replied “No!”. I laughed and asked the man himself what his own stuff was like and he gave the same answer. It’s the right answer, incidentally. Nobody sounds like this guy.

    9. Ramadanman – Tempest

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Rama’s productions are the perfect balance of eccentric and dancefloor, and this one has just the right balance of floaty, atmospheric bits and bumping drums.

    10. Seiji – Straylight

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

He was good in Bugz In The Attic and he’s great here. So perfectly staccato – stiff yet fluid.

    Jamie Grind – Footwork EP

Jamie Grind - Footwork EP - artwork

Glasgow’s Fortified Audio are currently preparing their 2011 assault and first up is Jamie Grind with the “Footwork EP”.

The title track opens the EP with vocal snippets chopped and layered over a light percussive backing, short snappy synth loops and a serious amount of sub bass. Hackman pops in next to throw his hat into the ring on “Saw The Light” with it’s chipmunk vox and wobbly bass interludes before “Without You” lands next and proves the stand out track of the EP for me.

Utilising anthemic pads, light vocals and a shuffly garage break to brilliant effect, it’s the kind of track that makes sense at 1PM and 1AM. “Now You Know” closes the EP and appears in a moody puff of smoke with melancholy synth work and a main hook that whistles it’s way into your memory.

Available digitally in early January exclusively at Boomkat with vinyl to follow later in the month. The cracking artwork is also worth a mention and is the work of Drew Millward.

    Instra:mental - Voyeur - artwork

Another week, another brilliant Instra:mental release. With their “Resolution 653″ album now scheduled in for April next year, it seems they haven’t slowed up a tad.

This is their debut for Skream’s Disfigured Dubz imprint and is another example of why their debut album is one of 2011′s most anticipated releases. Following on from recent brilliant electro tinged techno 12″ “Zones”, “Voyeur” sees the duo ramp it up to 135 and retain their trademark atmospherics and bass overload (the bass sound recalling the very best of the Audio Blueprint sound) with a creepy “Let’s Talk” style vocal sample.

    Available now at Boomkat.

George FitzGerald – Don’t You EP

Hotflush are maybe one of the most underrated labels of 2010. While not big on the number of releases, the quality is always very high.

To kick off 2011 they have George FitzGerald back with the “Don’t You” EP. Its 2 step and garage leanings intertwined with a high synth repeat is combined with a low soulful vocal edit to create a strangely hypnotic brew. The flip side has a more upfront beat by SCB while still retaining the atmosphere of the original.

Johnny Beverton - Polymol - artwork

Translation Recordings recently impressed us with their brilliant “Without Borders” compilation and as the year draws to a close they’ve lined up an impressive release from new producer Johnny Beverton.

The name’s a new one on me but he’s definitely impressed with his debut for the imprint. “Polymol” is a fairly stripped back slice of drum n bass but without resorting to the usual minimal cliches. The funk element is retained with a fuzzy bassline wandering over beats with enough bottom end to have punch and the track sits nicely in that area towards the end of a warm up set.

You can pick this up at the Translation Bandcamp this week and keep one eye on this new producer with further outings on Offworld and Variant Audio.
