    4 Hero – Les Fleur

    4 Hero - Les Fleur - artwork

I was a huge fan of 4 Hero’s early jungle and breakbeat work but personally wasn’t hugely taken with their smoother/jazzier material. This track however jumps out from their 2001 “Creating Patterns” album and never fails to bring a smile to my face and a lump to my throat.

Minnie Riperton of course was the first to record the track, and as timeless as it is, I could never get enough of 4 Hero’s cover and Carina Andersson’s brilliant vocal. Adding their unique polish and upping the epic factor even more with an abundance of strings and atmospherics, it’s hard to find words to describe just how uplifting the track’s crescendo’s and breakdowns are.

Lie back, close your eyes, turn up the volume and let the track wash over you. It doesn’t really get much better.

Untold - System Freeze - artwork

Despite being one of the longest running labels in the history of electronic music, 2010 has arguably been one of the the strongest years in R&S’s history. The label has released new material from the legendary Model 500, taken new talent on board such as James Blake and Pariah and their next release sees Untold join the family.

As co-owner of Hemlock and with releases under his belt for Hotflush, Hessle Audio and Soul Jazz, Untold has an impressive back catalogue, it seems however that he’s saved some of his best work yet for R&S.

The lead track on the 12 – “System Freeze” is the standout for me here. Charging in with monstrous amounts of sub bass and metallic handclaps while working it’s way up to a short n snappy synth hook that sits atop proceedings before calm is restored temporarily half way through. The second half of the track piles on some eerie melodies while the crunchy breaks pound along beneath.

As with his previous work, the track has a thoroughly epic feel that makes it feel much longer than it’s 6 minute duration. Quality stuff and hopefully just the tip of the iceberg of his work for the label.

Released 8th November on 12″ and 22nd November digitally.

    T. Williams – Getting Mine

    T Williams

    T. Williams is another producer that’s built up an impressive catalogue of releases throughout 2010. His releases on Local Action and Deep Teknologi have been firm favourites on the playlist at the Labs and “Getting Mine” for Buraka Som Sistema’s new imprint Enchufada is sure to join them. It’s a bit of a banger with it’s intense high pitched synth line leading the charge ably aided and abetted by pounding drums and heavy percussion. The flip sees the Drumstrumental version stripping back the synth work and destroying more drum skins in the process.

Released on November 15th and it’ll be available at Junodownload.

Hatikvah - Spend Some Time - artwork

Hatikvah’s recent “Synchronicity” album for Soma was packed with quality dub techno and now it’s time for the remixers to get to work. Silicone Soul are the first to step up to the oche and they’ve taken a pop at “Spend Some Time”.

We’re in fairly deep house territory here with an infectious bassline that’s prominent right from the off. Using the vocals sparingly throughout, there’s an ethereal atmosphere running through the track with it’s haunting guitar notes strung out over a moody backing.

It’s a cracking remix and released November 15th. Available to pre-order now at the Soma Shop.

    A belter of a beard

After harnessing the beard power for volumes 1 and 2, I decided that it may be time for me to grow the beard back. The shavings I discovered in the jar which provided the power for Vol 2 are running a little low. and as we’re approaching Decembeard it may be the time.

Anyway, have a wee listen below to the third in the Beardism volume, while I scour the web for further beard inspiration. Stream below or download for portable listening.

    Scary pumpkin

Well as today is Halloween I thought a nice wee roasted pumpkin might do the job. Only after I’ve managed to carve a scary face into it first of course.

First up is from the master……Enjoy!

    Egyptian Lover – Freak-A-Holic

Egyptian Lover (aka Greg Broussard) was born and raised in LA and was a contributor to the early dance and rap scene in the west coast. DJ, producer and record label boss was no mean feat and he was responsible for several albums and EP’s both his own and for other artists.

Released in 1986 the “One Track Mind” LP contain the track “Freak-A-Holic” which later that year was release as a remix EP. Multilayer synths, funk to burn and early rap like lyrics make this not only a total classic but also a futureproof track still wrecking dance floors to this day.
