Max Richter - Infra - artwork

New material from Max Richter is always greeted with open arms here and “Infra” may prove to be his best work yet. The album began as the score to a ballet, written back in November 2008, now extended and given life as a full album project.

From the opening tracks radio fuzz (which plays a part throughout), through to the use of strings and atmosphere that hark back to the greatness of his “Blue Notebooks” album, this is an absolutely joy to listen to. Richter creates a space and dynamic that almost becomes instantly recognisable but that stands apart from his other work. A few piano pieces drift in and out throughout and from start to finish this is an absolutely beautiful album.

I’ve picked out a couple of tracks below to give you an idea but I’d highly recommend heading over to Boomkat and picking up a copy of the whole shebang asap.

Machine Drum – Many Faces EP

We are so glad that Machinedrum and the LuckyMe collective have teamed up to bring us the Many Faces EP. Jam packed with early electronic production values this EP fronts up with quaking bass and acid tinges while squeezing in Hip Hop and dubby beats. There is still room however to fit in more melodic vocal samples and pleasing synth chords. Classic genre bending stuff. On top of that there is a remix of “Carry The Weight” by Bok Bok that will be wrecking dance floors for months to come.

Have a listen to the EP samples below and then head over to Boomkat to pick up a copy. You can also check out magazine site URB to pick up a free copy of “Lemme f_ck it”. Bonus!

One for the veggies this week with a tasty nut roast to help keep the animals safe for another week. With work continuing on the forthcoming Phuturelabs label launch we revisit some old friends for this weeks selection.

First up we have Jimmy Edgar. With the delayed release of his album XXX just round the corner we have more goodies for free. Having given away the original of “Hot Raw Sex” here, the EP has just been released and we now have the Machinedrum remix for you to grab.

Next up we have the wonderful Ratatat. Their latest album LP4 has not been off the speakers at Labs HQ for several weeks. We played the tune “Drugs” during our Experiment 5 radio show and now we have the tune “Party With Children” for you to grab for free.

    L-Vis 1990 – Forever You EP

Night Slugs are back with another quality release proving once again that they are one of the hottest new labels around. On post rave duty for the “Forever You” EP is L-Vis 1990.

The dirty house beats of “Do you Remember” are sharp and hypnotic. Title track “Forever You” cuts more towards post dubstep and grime, with the track I’ve gone for “Into the Stars” leaning back in the house tip with long synth repeats overlaid with 808 samples. Another essential release to pick up at Boomkat now.

    Massive Attack – Unfinished Sympathy

Formed out of the Wild Bunch in Bristol in the late 80′s Massive Attack have lasted the pace more than most electronic acts formed at that time. With six albums under their belts with various line ups they are masters of the blissed out trip hop sound that came to life during the inception of the early 90′s dance culture.

The sound is summed up no better that with the all time classic “Unfinished Sympathy” from the eponymous first album “Blue Lines”. Financial support came from Neneh Cherry, who’s husband Cameron McVey also provided production expertise. Out of these early recordings came Labs favourite Tricky and well as members of Portishead, together they would emerge to create a whole new musical genre.

Sit back, relax and lets the beautiful vocal, and string arrangements take you back. Blissful yet emetional this song never fails to hit the spot.

We have had a promo copy of the new Mount Kimbie album for some time but had been asked to keep it under wraps until nearer the launch. With that day fast approaching, our good friends at FACT have secured a stream of the whole album to get you in the mood for purchase come the 19th of July. This is for one week only so be quick!

The album is a joy to listen to and will surely be remembered as an underground classic in years to come. After the initial success of their early EP’s the journey into post dubstep electronica contunues to deepen. Melding and molding bleeps, beats and samples has created a visceral sound scape with a real sense of purpose and emotion. The album seems to get better and better with each listen. Highlights include “Before I Move Off”, “Mayor” and “Field” with all tunes on offer providing subtle mood changes and highlights.

You can also listen to and get a free copy of the tune “Field” from the album courtesy of XLR8R. This album is well worth your pennies and is out at all the usual outlets on Hotflush.

Dj Fresh - Kryptonite - artwork

Dj Fresh’s second album “Kryptonite” lands on August 9th and while it’s packed wall-to-wall with anthemic numbers – ranging from vocal fuelled drum n bass to dubstep smashers – it’s “Acid Rain” that jumped out for me as the album’s highlight. Taking a step back from radio-friendly beats and hooks, Fresh returns to his roots with this big Bad Company style drum n bass smasher.

Also – there’s a shiney video now available for the album’s next single – Gold Dust – have a goosey:
