Just recently I was going on about how we hadn’t heard from Boy 8 Bit for a while and his Retro/Grade remix was the first new material in a while. Pretty much the day I posted that he announced a new EP set for release on June 27th.

The new tracks are sounding quality and the Boy himself has kindly given away two tracks from the forthcoming EP which you can grab below. “Phase IV” is my pick of the bunch, combining sci fi style eerie synth work with his familiar dancefloor friendly bassed packed backing.

It’s been quite a while since we heard from Boy 8-Bit and this remix shows he’s far from lost anything in his absence.

The Retro/Grade original is a rather large disco styled number and Boy 8-Bit’s rework toughens up the beats a little, strips back the vocals and delivers a main room banger that’s whet our appetite nicely for new material from the man himself.

With a series of huge tunes already under his belt, Boy 8-Bit is easing his way into 2011 with the promise of a full album before the year is out. The folk over at FAT! asked him about his plans for this year ahead of his gig for them tonight at Cable and also gave away this rather tidy remix of one of his biggest tracks from last year, “The Keep”.

It’s a nice tidy chunk of house that utilises the track’s huge hook sparingly and coats it in a wall of sub bass and moody atmospherics. Grab it for free below and get yourself along to Cable tonight to find out more.

We love a bit of Boy 8-Bit here at the Labs and any new material is greeted with open arms. New EP – Still Killing arrived last week on Mad Decent and alongside a host of remixes of previous material from the likes of Memory Tapes and Obi Blanche, tucked away at the end of the EP was this gem. Taking in trademark Boy 8-Bit old skool funk breaks, synthy stabs and a big ol’ shoulder shakin bassline, it’s a corker.

Boy 8-Bit – Ghost House (Suspense Is Killing Me, Pt. II)

While Boy 8-Bit’s known more for tunes on the slightly wonky side, “The Keep” sees him deliver a lovely chunk of straight up techy, electroy house. With a synth hook to die for and catchy finger clicks, it’s a tune you’ll find floating around in your head all day after one listen.

Thanks go to the excellent XLR8R online magazine for bringing us an exclusive free download of M.A.N.D.Y. vs. Booka Shade – Donut (Gui Boratto Remix). This song first appeared on the 2007 5 Years of Get Physical compilation.

The techno aspect of the original is enhanced by Boratto’s use of glitchy, atmospheric keyboard work and metallic strings. It’s worth checking out the release on Beatport as further reworks from people such a Boy 8 Bit and Ben Hoo make it a must have. Also keep an eye out for the long awaited Booka Shade third album later this year.
