Saturday is funk, soul and disco day here at the Labs and while we’ve mostly been dipping into the past, today we’ve got something new for your lugholes.

It’s a chunky funker from a Glasgow producer who has adopted the Ron Trinidad moniker.

Sampling a well known bassline, chopping it and placing it around a firm kick drum backing and lush keys, it’s a case of it’s not big and it’s not clever but it’s guaranteed to soundtrack some good times (see what I did there…).

If you haven’t heard of Alexander Robotnick and you like electronic music then it’s time to get yourself acquainted. The Italian producer, real name Maurizio Dami, first came to prominence in 1983 with the track “Problèmes d’amour”, now recognised as a nailed down classic tune.

Since those early days he has been a pioneer of electronic music making everything from disco, to house and techno and onwards into the worlds of ambient and drone.

Just before Xmas, his label Hot Elephant Music announced that there would be a series of archive releases over the course of the year, where tracks have been remastered or remixed and maybe even a hidden gem or two.

We we have some samples for you to get your teeth into to lift to post new year blues. Sit back and listen to a master at work.

Skream is certainly keeping the output of his Disfigured Dubz imprint nice and varied at the moment. Following the deep n dark atmospheres of the last 12″ from D Bridge is this disco style romp from new producer Echo Park.

Alongside the original mix there’s a brilliant remix from Phuturelabs fave Jon Convex. Resisting the temptation to drop the vocals completely, he instead pitches them down nicely and wraps them around a squidgy slab of dark house goodness.

The Rapture bring the love with a new EP which unusually may not actually contain the original. It is however crammed full of quality remixes from A-Trak, Emperor Machine and Populette.

With the original bringing sweet 90′s piano chords and a soulful vocal there’s plenty for these guys to work with. My personal favourite is the extended Emperor Machine rework which adds the analogue sounds he is famous for, turning the track into a mutant disco affair.

Another thing of note for the EP is not only the free giveaway of the A-Trak remix but also that he has dedicated it to DJ Mehdi, who sadly passed away a couple of weeks ago.

As usual A-Trak goes for the booty beats which I’m sure Mehdi would have approved off. RIP. Stream his mix below or download for portable listening.

We recently reviewed Histibe’s brilliant debut album “Take The Form” and it’s still picking up regular play around the Labs with it’s quality blend of deep drum n bass and electronica. As the album’s been doing so well, the producer has decided to offer up a free tune in the shape of “Forgotten Station”, a nice wee chunky slab of techstep goodness.

Any new work from My Panda Shall Fly is sure to grab our attention here at the Labs and this nifty rework of Psychologist is no different. Taking the slightly strange original, pushing the vocals down into the mix and draping a cloak of chunky electronica over the top, it’s a cracking remix and you can grab it for free below.

Two heavyweights of the house/disco scene meet as Glasgow meets Melbourne to produce some head nodding funk that is unsurpassed. All hail Tornado Wallace and The Revenge. The EP this weapon appears on is due out on Instruments of Rapture in September.

It’s been out for a couple of weeks but I’m just catching up with some bits and bobs. The guilty pleasure of Holy Ghost! continues as the DFA outfit give the tune “Some Children” away for free. Its electronic pop at its best with a killer slowed down groove.

The Count & Sinden have lined up a formidable army of producers to remix their “Mega Mega Mega” debut album and a release date of August 1st has been set.

Included in the line up are brilliant remixes from Hot City, Lone, Canblaster and more. Our favourite of the bunch though to be Krystal Klear’s disco’d up rework of “After Dark”. Keeping some of the Mystery Jets’ vocal intact, he’s sprinkled some of his magic over the track and unleashed a summery monster.

The elusive partnership of Tiger & Woods have released some top quality disco based reworks in the past 18 months. Shrouded in secrecy, the platters arrive as white labels with golfing references in the titles.

With their identities kept a firm secret they are about to release an official album, comprising of the majority of the white label material with a couple of new bits thrown in for good measure. This will be an essential purchase for lovers of the house and disco genre and you can preview some of the tracks below.
