Glasgow-based producer Linden has come a long way since making his debut on my wee Nerve imprint.

Releases for labels such as Horizons and Renegade Hardware have strengthened his reputation as one of the most impressive new producers of the past five years and there’s plenty where that came from.

While things had seemed to slow down at Commix HQ while they concentrated on their Shifted moniker, Metalheadz have lined up a compilation of unreleased goodies from the duo set for release in March.

The tracks were written between 2003 and 2008 but easily stand the test of time and make this a must have album for 2012.

The tracklisting is packed with gold with jungly meanderings and sub bass a-plenty with plenty of fodder for the head as well as the dancefloor.

There’s also a new full Commix album set for release in Oct/Nov and with the shift (see what I did there) to house and techno, it may be a more of a mixed bag tempo wise than debut “Call To Mind”.

Bournemouth label Ingredients have steadily built up a reputation for quality drum n bass rollers and their first outing in 2012 comes courtesy of Krakota.

Blending classic jungle style sub bass with up to date production, the two tracker has already picked up support from the likes of Marcus Intalex and is sure to find its way into the box of any drum n bass dj worth their salt.

Released on the 23rd of January but available to pre-order now at the Ingredients shop.

Also as an added bonus, Krakota has offered up the VIP remix of 2011 track”Be Myself” for free download.

ASC’s extensive back catalogue is filled to the brim with top quality electronica, drum n bass and lovely ambient meanderings.

He continues to add to it at a rapid pace however and the latest to appear is this chunk of crunchy 170 BPM funk. Crystal clear percussion rattles around a body of raw sub bass and spacey atmospherics to fill up this brilliant 12″ that opens ASC’s account nicely for 2012.

Rob Haigh AKA Omni Trio first popped up on the Moving Shadow catalogue with the classic “Mystic Stepper” in 1993, it was his next release later that year though that would forever carve his name into drum n bass history.

The classic piano line, uplifting vocal sample and simple but hugely effective bassline of “Renegade Snares” never fails to cause those of us of a certain age to get misty eyed.

For me, it was always about the Foul Play remix though – released later the same year on a limited 10″.

It’s been a long time coming but Loxy and Resound’s debut album “Burning Shadows” has finally arrived on dbridge’s Exit imprint and it’s a ragga infused tech drum’n'bass belter.

The album’s 13 tracks feature eerie sci-fi style atmospheric soundscapes with plenty of menacing dub bass and sparse d’n'b percussion. I’ve been listening to this a lot in the last month and, while it has one eye on the past, it has the other firmly on the future and perfectly encapsulates their unique sound.

Stand out tracks for me are “Sin City” with its fear inducing acidic bass line and half time feel (think of it as the perfect music for the chase scene from Ridley Scott’s “Alien“) , and “Conqueror X” with its deep dark repetitive bass line.

Perfect late night listening – just make sure the doors are locked……

Luke Vibert last donned the Plug alias for the brilliant “Drum n Bass For Papa” album in 1996 and Ninja Tune have just unearthed a treasure trove of unreleased material from that time.

Time has been kind to the material and the label have gathered the goodies together for an album entitled “Back On Time”, set for release on January 9th.

“Feeling So Special” has been unleashed to whet the appetite and it’s a classy slab of old skool dnb that still sounds better than the majority of the genre’s output of the last 10 years.

Plug – Feeling So Special

Good Looking are responsible for some of the finest moments in drum n bass history and this atmospheric roller from 93 is up there with the best.

As with all the best tunes from the era, it’s simple but hugely effective, combining otherworldly atmospherics and pads with a tough rollin’ amen and a wall of sub bass.

Originally released as Tayla with Bukem getting production credits and later re-released as LTJ Bukem & Tayla.

LTJ Bukem & Tayla – Bang The Drums

Glasgow producer Morphy is a firm favourite here at the Labs and this new EP for Translation is sure to cement that reputation further.

As with all of his material, the tracks shake off the shackles of drum n bass and show a maturity and depth in their production that’s amiss in most of the genre’s output.

Each track manages to sustain the otherworldly atmosphere that runs across the EP and each feels like another piece of the jigsaw.

“The Gate” is the standout track for me however with it’s drums sitting so perfectly in the mix that it feels as if the track must have appeared fully formed. Brilliant track.

Friction launched Shogun Audio in 2004 and since then the label’s output has ranged from deep n dark minimal meanderings from the likes of Alix Perez through to big main room smashers from The Prototypes.

To mark their 50th release, they’ve decided to gather the imprint’s finest together in one place for 12 track compilation “Way of the Warrior”. Alongside staples such as Icicle and Perez there’s also the odd guest popping in for the ride including dBridge and Break.

As with the previous output, the styles vary throughout but the best moments are when the foot’s taken off the gas slightly and the producers let the beats breathe a little.

The album’s released on CD, vinyl and digital download on the 17th of October but available to pre-order now over at the Shogun shop.
