Glasgow producer Morphy has had an impressive 2011 with some quality releases that have further cemented his place at the top of the pile if you’re looking for quality dubby beats that dodge genre classification.

To bring the year to an end he’s decided to offer up three free downloads. All he asks if that you make a small donation to Crisis if you grab the tracks. The charity provides support for the homeless in their time of need and even a quid is of help to those less fortunate.

Glasgow producer Morphy is a firm favourite here at the Labs and this new EP for Translation is sure to cement that reputation further.

As with all of his material, the tracks shake off the shackles of drum n bass and show a maturity and depth in their production that’s amiss in most of the genre’s output.

Each track manages to sustain the otherworldly atmosphere that runs across the EP and each feels like another piece of the jigsaw.

“The Gate” is the standout track for me however with it’s drums sitting so perfectly in the mix that it feels as if the track must have appeared fully formed. Brilliant track.

After a long summer hiatus we’ve donned white coats again to bring you out latest musical experiment. We dust off the rust in style with a selection containing more than it’s fair share of techno heavy bangers and Paul’s claims of child birth are interrupted by serious speaker issues.

The music shines through though with the likes of Joe Goddard, WK7, Blawan, Taz Buckfaster, Scuba and Boddika in the mix.

Originally released as part of Morphy’s “Dubtopia EP”, the smoky sounds of “Warren Dub” have been constantly on the playlist at the Labs since its release two years ago. Belgian duo The Untouchables have now been drafted in to give the track a wee update for 2011.

With forthcoming releases for labels such as Renegade Hardware, Translation, Alphacut and more, this gives listeners a taste of what to expect from their future output. Keeping the atmosphere of the original intact, it’s more of a re-edit than a complete rework, but if it ain’t broke…

Deadboy keeps the ball rolling after his recent “Here EP” on Numbers and next up is this piano-laden Paul Weller rework.

Pretty much ditching all of Weller’s vocals and turning in a summery slab of melancholy house goodness dripping in low flying dub bass, rolling percussion and his trademark chipmunk vox sitting low in the mix.

Glasgow’s Morphy is one of our favourite producers here at the Labs, his unique brand of dubby beats constantly finding a place in our playlists. His latest outing “Backpack” is available now on Loxy’s CX Digital with the promise of a ltd edition 7″ release to follow.

The track takes influences from classic dub and ambient electronica and throws them into the mixing pot alongside half time drum n bass. The result is a wonderful piece of music that dodges genre classification and demands a space in your collection.

Steve Mason’s debut solo album “Boys Outside” was one of last year’s stand out releases and the title track has already received a wonderful dubbed up remix from Andy Weatherall. Next single “All Come Down” sees Justin Robertson and Hervé step up to the remix desk.

Robertson dons his Deadstock 33s hat and takes the dub approach, stretching Mason’s vocals over an backing heavy on the echo and delays while Hervé takes inspiration from the ghost house genre and delivers a brilliant chunk of melancholy house.

Released through Domino on the 2nd of May.

Ramadanman is a name that pops up again and again here on the Labs and he’s a producer that consistently delivers quality with no exception. Combine this with the fact that this is released on Will Saul’s brilliant Aus Music label and you’re onto a guaranteed winner.

“Void 23″ takes a fairly minimal techno backing and dips it in a big bath of dubbed out effects while underpinning the whole thing with a almost constantly evolving bassline, moving from a moody hook in the first half of the track into an almost cheery melodic lead in the second. The track has a very live dub feel with sounds wandering in and out of the mix while a fuzzy earworm of a little synth hook remains consistent throughout.

Detroit legend Carl Craig has been starting his sets with this of late and on the flip he turns in a rather tasty re-edit. While it gives the track a slightly more dancefloor edge, I feel it loses a little of the atmosphere and depth of the brilliant original.
