Edinburgh rave monster Hostage dropped this at the weekend and it’s providing the perfect soundtrack to an almost sunny Glasgow afternoon. If you too are feeling the spring vibes, this mix of garagey beats, dubstep, electro house and ravey goodness should be right up your street. Tucked away within the tracklist is the first outing of “Witches”, the title track from his new EP forthcoming on Nightshifters, more on that later.

After Cliff’s extravagant pheasant roast last weekend I’ve decided to take things down a notch and get back to some grass-roots level roast beef.

We’ve got a barrel full of goodies to aid consumption this week and first up is a track from the brilliant “Mega Mega Mega” – the debut album from The Count and Sinden that’s just landed on Domino. The whole package is cracking but this track stands out for me as the pick of the bunch and should get you bopping about the kitchen as you’re preparing the tatties. Available now at Boomkat.

Next up is a cracking slice of garage goodness from Todd Edwards, this came out at the start of July but slipped under my radar, so just incase it also passed you buy – pop on over to Edwards’ Bandcamp page and pick up this badboy.

The Phuturelabs Inbox recently received an email from Global Goon (aka Johnny Hawk) with some sneak previews of his upcoming album “Earwhig“.

With tracks ranging from disco inspired acid, downtempo ambience to electro house funk it’s an eclectic acidy mash up of styles, and his first release for over two years.
With previous releases on Rephlex, WéMè, Balkan Vinyl, and his own J-Hok label, this one is available for free download on the Myuzyk label from the 20th of September 2010.

While it seems like a slightly unlikely partnership, Squarepusher teaming up with France’s Ed Banger has brought us this lovely chunky of electro-y house goodness. Mr Oizo takes the slap bass goodness of the original and ups the franticness factor for this monster.

Dating from 1991, Orbital’s “Belfast” stands out for me as being an absolute classic in electronic music terms.

Featuring an ethereal vocal sample taken from Hildegard von Bingen’s “O Euchari in leta via“, the track falls somewhere between downtempo house & chillout anthem.

The soundtrack to many a weekend for me & countless people over the years, and guaranteed to put a smile on your face if you didn’t already have one. Brilliant.

Belfast – Orbital

London’s Never Say Die Records have been releasing big chunky breaks, dubstep and drum n bass for a while now – with releases under their belt from Ctrl-Z, Freestylers, Foreign Beggars and Boabinga amongst others. Their mixtape series has also been wrecking speakers worldwide – with the first two volumes provided by Ctrl-Z and SKisM.

Stepping up for volume 3 is Affinity. Delivering a beat packed 70 odd minutes brimming to the top with bass, ranging from electro house to breaks to dubstep and rounding things off with some dancefloor filling drum n bass, it’s a bit of a monster. Get it downloaded and prepare yer bassbins.

While Boy 8-Bit’s known more for tunes on the slightly wonky side, “The Keep” sees him deliver a lovely chunk of straight up techy, electroy house. With a synth hook to die for and catchy finger clicks, it’s a tune you’ll find floating around in your head all day after one listen.

Edinburgh’s Hostage has been producing music for over a decade now and in recent years he’s honed his rave infused big room electro house shenanigans to perfection. We’re big fans here and his recent Essential Mix for Radio 1 has been on constant rotation.
