When Andy Weatherall gives someone the seal of approval you know that there is bound to be some quality there. The story goes that Lord Sabre was impressed by the material he’d received from Stopmakingme and it was only when they DJ’d at the same event that he realised it was one Daniel Avery, a young man who worked at his studio.

Spin forward to the start of this year and Mr Avery has a new EP coming out on Relish next month. The tunes are simple yet highly effective as the drum machine pulses out dark electro funk over crisp hats and effects.

Having already undertaken a remix for The Deadstock 33′s, big things are predicted in the coming year.

Well if you were living under a rock and missed any of Om Unit’s brilliant 2011 releases, here’s a rather tasty mix courtesy of Kid Kameleon that should bring you right up to date.

Showcasing the producer’s brilliant talent for dodging pigeonholes and taking in elements of electro, dubstep, IDM and most other electronic music genres, each track is more than worthy of its space on the mix with absolutely no fillers.

In a hugely impressive catalogue of beats, “Shackles” stands out as one of Glasgow producer Morphy’s finest moments. With it’s doomy chain gang sample draped over similarly creepy beats and bass it was one of the finest release of 2010.

Now, to bring the track crashing into 2011, Raiden dons his Kamikaze Space Programme cap (whose own “Algus EP” is doing fine business at the moment) and delivers a brilliantly moody electro retake.

With Civil Music lining up the quality releases of late (the new Drums of Death and Darling Farah EPs in particular have been picking up plenty of play at the Labs), this EP from Om Unit could almost have slipped under the radar.

No chance of that however as the London producer delivers some of his best work to date. The EP’s press release describes his material as “mechanical soul” and for me, that perfectly sums up his unique skill of wrapping the most human of melodies and lead lines around intricately constructed and almost robotic structures.

XLR8R have kindly offered up the opening track for free download and despite it’s sub 4 minute duration, it manages to explain the above description to a tee. Snappy kicks and soaking wet snares seem to flow beneath the world of crunchy synth work and roaming sub bass above.

The other three tracks continue the theme with each having it’s own identity but fitting nicely into the overall mould of the EP. There’s also some remix action courtesy of Ital Tek and Machinedrum and all in all this is by far one of the best releases of the year.

Our favourite Glasgow label Numbers have been relatively quiet over the last couple of months. They did however do a Benji B special on Radio 1 Xtra which allowed them to showcase some new tracks that were due to drop in the coming months.

The first of these is going to be the “Red Mask” EP from Belgium duo GoldFFinch. Its a heady blend of techno and electro that references the original brooding analogue sounds the drew the Numbers crew together in the first place.

This is due to drop on the 18th November from all good shops.

Only the other day I was wondering what Boddika had been up to. His output had been fairly regular over the past few years (with Instra:mental and solo) or so and he seemed to have gone quiet. Then these tracks appeared on the Darkestral soundcloud.

The label has a small but impressive back catalogue of beats from the likes of Pearson Sound, Fanu and Instra:mental. While they too had been fairly quiet of late it seems they’d simply been working in the shadows.

With a couple of releases lined up, these two new more experimental numbers from Boddika stand out. “See Me” is the pick of the bunch – dark moody electro with that polish you’ve come to expect.

“Lost Transmissions” is on a movie soundtrack style tip with subtle atmospheric touches worked around a simple drum track and a wall of fuzzy bass.

Both tracks are released as part of a 4 track EP on the 7th November.

No pre-order links as of yet but the rest of the Darkestral back catalogue was available via Boomkat so they should appear there soon.

After some research to get the right number we are proud to bring you Experiment 16. Its our usual heady blend of house, techno, garage and artist with difficult to produce names. We also do our bit for the animals with a Mole v Panda stand off.

The quality of the tunes shines through as always with plates from Mosca, Dam Funk, Slam, Radiohead, Modeselektor, Lone and much more….

After much touring and time spent developing their now firmly established label Monkeytown as well as quality offshoot 50 Weapons, the German duo Modeselektor, synonymous with feel good techno, hip hop and electro, are back with a new album.

With two massive long players under their belt in “Hello Mom” and “Happy Birthday” the bar has been set very high and the new album comes with inbuilt expectations.

Access to promo tunes has been tight due to the fear of piracy but we have finally managed to listen to the whole album several times and can happily report that the if it’s not broken approach has produced another record rich with everything you will have loved in their previous work. You might even say its their most accomplished yet.

One of the greatest things that we can thank Soma Recordings for in their 20 year history is bringing us Daft Punk. With some of the best albums of the 90′s and early 2000′s, an amazing live show and projects like the Tron Legacy soundtrack, the French duo sit at the top of the tree.

It all began in the mid 90′s when a demo DAT was received in Glasgow which became the duo’s first releases and would also make up some of the tracks from their seminal release “Homework”.

Today’s classic sees us pick this monster from the album and we also have details of a competition that our friends at Radio Magnetic are running to win tickets for the Glasgow party, a copy of the triple CD and and exclusive Soma 20 T-shirt. Check here for further details.
