Lorn’s been rather generous of late with the free 38 track “Self Confidence Vol 2″ picking up a lot of play around the Labs. Next up for free download is this huge remix of Barbara Panther’s “Empire”.

The original features a slightly creepy vocal wasted on an average backing and this is where Lorn steps in, upping the atmosphere and strapping the vox around a big column of dark beats and bass.

Shy FX is regarded as one of the pioneers of jungle and drum n bass and over the years has released countless classics within the genre. While he’s dipped his toes in the mainstream charts, he’s retained his underground credentials and anthems such as “Bambaata” still appear regularly in Dj sets to this day. 2011 will see his latest album project “Larger Than Life” surface and the first taster from the album has arrived in the shape of new single – “Raver”.

The track sees him pile on the vocals thick with appearances from Kano, Donaeo and Roses Gabor and while the original is a fairly strong track, it’s the remixes which really lift the track to the next level. To keep the drum n bass heads happy Benny Page delivers a straightforward jump up mix while MJ Cole delivers a grungy garagey mix and Breakage steps up to deliver the pick of the bunch.

Taking the vocal overload of the original and sprinkling it over a gem of an old skool track, it showcases Breakage at his finest. While he’s had a ridiculously good year on the remix tip, this finishes things off in fine style – delivering an amazing slice of jungle goodness that would sound perfectly in place in 1995 as it does in 2010.

Today sees the launch of our brand new Phuturelabs label. It’s been in the works for some time and the first release goes to one of Edinburgh producer Alan Parley’s pseudonyms Wira.

The tracks land in that nice grey area between genres and sneakily avoid pigeonholing. Taking in elements of dubstep, house, uk funky and everything in-between. Support has kindly come from fine publications such as XLR8R and The List and Dj’s who’ve gotten behind it include Sinden, SBTRKT and Radio 1′s Mary Anne Hobbs and Vic Galloway.

On the artwork side of things, Glasgow’s Konx-Om-Pax took some time out from his Display Copy project, producing artwork for Hudson Mohawke and videos for the likes of Underground Resistance and Jamie Lidell to put together this lovely chunk of art for us. Keep an eye on his work and make sure you catch him on tour with Mogwai early next year.

We’re very proud of this release and as this material is released via a Creative Commons license you can download a ZIP file containing the tracks in full quality WAV format and the artwork and you can also stream the tracks or download them in 320kbps MP3 format.

Young Montana? – Twenty3Skidoo

Edinburgh based DJ & musician Hostage (aka Alan Parley) teams up with RTA for an old school tinged, bass thumper of a track in the shape of “Dog Bark Bass”.

Hostage had this to say about the background to the track:

RTA is tWiSt. So, we’re sittin round my gaff, Bank Holiday monday, a bit melted, bored, so… down the boozer for 2 pints of Staroprammen, get back… let’s make a beat. Nice day, windows are open, but it’s not the Nice Day stationery dog that’s outside is it? No, it’s some noisy cunt of a moving dog. RTA is on the cross-trainer working it, popping wasabi peas and says “make the bass sound like a dog bark”. woof. woofer. high speed ridd ensues, then we found out that even at 16 metres away and with the dog outside a closed window, the noise level of a barking dog can be well over the level that causes psychological distress. the very best of luck to you.

Bonobo (aka Simon Green) returns with his fourth album entitled “Black Sands“. Available on the Ninja Tunes label from the 29th of March it’s possibly his finest work to date – and an album I’ve had on heavy rotation the last few weeks.

Featuring a wealth of real instruments (not heard all that often in dance music as a rule……unfortunately) the album spans genre’s – from dub two step, to hip hop, to breakbeat – and features chopped up vocal samples, lush strings, and sub bass. In places it also reminds me of Ninja Tune stablemates Cinematic Orchestra.

Overall, a cracking release, and one well worth checking out.
