Edinburgh’s Profisee has a history of quality beats with the Scotland Yard Emcees, The Great Ezcape and guest vocal work for the likes of Neil Landstrumm and Hexstatic. He also delivered a brilliant EP in the shape of “Logan’s Run” for our Phuturelabs label.

2012 however is the year where he stands at the forefront and finally releases his debut solo album – “From All Angles”. A taster appeared at the end of last year in the shape of the Dam Mantle produced “Mind Over Matter”.

The next installment to appear is the Starkey produced “Hold Up”. Set for release on February 20th through Edinburgh label Abaga Records, the pack comes filled to the brim with remixes from local talent including Tactus and The Setup. The real gem however is the original and sees Prof’s brilliant vocal expertly placed inside Starkey’s dubstep tinged backing.

Profisee’s also been giving away some unreleased gems via his Soundcloud, the latest of which is the brilliant “Demons” from the unreleased “Scotland Yard LP”. Hop on over and scoop the rest up before they go.

This time of year often sees many labels and artists getting all festive and giving away some quality beats for free. While we’ve been lapping up the freebies we’ve resisted the Christmas tunes so far.

Things changed however when Paul White dropped the tune “We Three Kings” into our inbox.

Its a Christmas title with White’s usual blend of hip hop beats and samples with just a tip of the hat to the original.

Radio Magnetic were at this year’s Homegame festival armed with cameras and captured a series of sessions in their wee cottage in Pittenweem. Our particular fave is from MPC master Kev Sim AKA River of Slime.

The Slime was first unleashed in the form of “Volume One” on our Phuturelabs imprint and since then he’s gone on to spread his slimey goodness around the world. Watch a track below and download both parts of his Pittenweem live set under the vid.

Lately its been health v sugar as myself and Paul have had our snack battles. It can be a tricky choice how to spend your Saturday munching and after our DJ set and show during the week I need sugar. So here we go with a set sugar to maximum move as we host the Pick’n'Mix. The buzz may last for ages so we better make sure its a bumper crop of freebies this week.

One of the tunes of 2010 was without doubt “Fatherless” by the Ben Westbeech alter ego Breach. Well now that the dust has settled, he is giving away the VIP mix of this when you sign up to his website. Well worth the effort.

The US broken beat hip hop and electronica producer has always been generous with his tracks thanks to his relationship with Ghostly. The free madness continues full steam ahead this week as we round off with a classic tune being given away for free. X-Press 2 have decided that the tune X-Press 2 – Kill 100 with Carl Craig on the remix can be yours for a like on their Facebook page. Why not!

After much touring and time spent developing their now firmly established label Monkeytown as well as quality offshoot 50 Weapons, the German duo Modeselektor, synonymous with feel good techno, hip hop and electro, are back with a new album.

With two massive long players under their belt in “Hello Mom” and “Happy Birthday” the bar has been set very high and the new album comes with inbuilt expectations.

Access to promo tunes has been tight due to the fear of piracy but we have finally managed to listen to the whole album several times and can happily report that the if it’s not broken approach has produced another record rich with everything you will have loved in their previous work. You might even say its their most accomplished yet.

Scroobius Pip’s work with Dan Le Sac has produced some of the finest hip hop of the past 10 years but listening to Pip’s 2007 debut “No Commercial Breaks” often left me wondering what the end product would be like if he were to vary up the producers behind the desk once more. Well, I need wonder no longer as his second solo outing “Distraction Pieces” has arrived.

With a mini whirlwind of hype surrounding debut single “Introdiction”, the bar was set high and second single “Let Em Come” maintained the adrenaline rush and threw Sage Francis into the mix.

The singles however only tell a fraction of the story and for the complete picture, “Distraction Pieces” deserves your full attention. With a variety of producers at the controls, ranging from Renholder (Nine Inch Nails, Puscifer etc) to Steve Mason and Richard Russell of XL fame, you’d possibly expect the overall feel to be a little scatty. You’d be wrong however and the atmosphere running throughout the piece is sustained by Pip’s flawless delivery and intelligent lyricism.

The pace is pretty much kept up for two thirds of the album before you hit the best track on the album and possibly one of Pip’s finest moments to date – the Steve Mason produced “The Struggle”. Dealing with the strangeness of fame and setting it to a groove that leans heavily on “Personal Jesus”, it’s an absolutely brilliant track.

The album closes with two slightly melancholy tracks and leaves you hungry for more as all the best long players do.

The album’s available now everywhere but we’d heartily recommend you pick it up at fairsharemusic where 50% of the shop’s profits go directly to charity.

A recent car journey with a friend at work revealed that we shared a mutual love for Grand Central Records. This sent me back to the catalogue to listen to some of the classic albums contained within and Aim’s amazing debut album always stuck out as one of the highlights.

From the beautiful hook and laid back leanings of the title track through to the hip hop outings and the wonderful vocal track with Kate Rogers, it’s a timeless album that deserves a place in everyone’s collection.

So take a wee trip back to 1999 and get your lazy sunday on.

We recently reviewed Histibe’s brilliant debut album “Take The Form” and it’s still picking up regular play around the Labs with it’s quality blend of deep drum n bass and electronica. Any new work from My Panda Shall Fly is sure to grab our attention here at the Labs and this nifty rework of Psychologist is no different. While his “Medusa EP” is still on constant rotation at the Labs, it seems S-Type has been no slouch in the studio. As well as his recent FOUND remix and starting work on his debut release for LuckyMe, he’s slung this rather tasty chunk of synth heavy hip hop goodness up for free download.

The track also features on the Finest Ego compilation on Project:Mooncircle and it’s worth checking out the rest of the comp for some quality production talent from the UK and Ireland.
