Hudson Mohawke – Make It Up To You (Re-Edit)

Our close friends at Radio Magnetic have announced they are moving all of their content onto the excellent Mixcloud platform for streaming. Over the last 10 years The Magnetic collective have established themselves as one of the most forward thinking musical stations responsible for the first plays for acts such as Mylo, FOUND, Hudson Mohawke, Dimlite, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Alex Smoke, Vector Lovers and many others.

By moving the content to Mixcloud they will now open up their content onto the every growing smart phone market with the newly released Mixcloud App. With potentially 10 years of content to choose from with live sessions from the likes of Cinematic Orchestra, Jose Gonzales, Wu Tang Clan, Candi Staton, Marlena Shaw, Gwen McRae, Kool Keith etc that’s a real aural pleasure right there.

It must be the season for unleashing monster tunes with none of the usual preamble. Following Jamie XX’s outing on Numbers we have the first taster of the even more long awaited new EP from Hud Mo on Warp.

After a long stint touring and a broken foot the man is back with what’s bound to be a stomping EP. As a preview, we have the massive “Thunder Bay”, a track that’s been popping up in the sets of some of the world’s biggest DJs for the past 12 months or so. Whistles well and truly whet.

We love Jamie Woon on here and covered his new single earlier this week here. We also love Hudson Mohawke, so when we heard there was a remix to promo the upcoming “Lady Luck” single we got just a little excited. What we got surely has to be one of the biggest remixes of the year so far. Massive!

Lorn – Tomorrow

In my mind this song sounds like the end of the world happening. It conjures images of the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse bringing forth the angels of armageddon, entire cities collapse whist engulfed in flames as darkness envelopes the world & the demise of humanity unfolds……. Well maybe I have quite a warped & active imagination, but i can really feel a sense of fear, despair & hopelessness in this track. This track & the rest of the LP can stand up there with the likes of Burial’s albums, in the sense that you can listen to it and really feel & get an understanding of the artists emotions. Whereas Burial really captures that sense of longing & heartbreak, Lorn equally captures a sense of pain, anger & frustration & I think that this track pretty much reflects that really well, even in the title.

Kyle Hall – You Know What I Feel

A nice slice of Detroit Soul 2-step from the annoyingly young Kyle Hall (I say this as I wish I could have created music this educated and developed at the tender age of 18). Beautiful textured pads melt over smooth sub bass & stuttered kick patterns, whilst the song is driven by an assault of neck jerking compressed hi hats. Throw in a catchy vocoder vocal & you have a winner in my eyes. The song is so delicate & has such a lovely pace to it, it gently wraps itself around everyone in the club until people are totally absorbed into it & dancing away without even thinking about it. A real eyes closed, smiles on faces kind of track.

Kuedo – Starfox

Jamie Vex’d comes correct with some of the finest leftfield beats under his Kuedo (pronounced kudo) guise. This track is taken from the Dream Sequence EP on Planet Mu and it blew me away the first time I heard it. Many people try and create this kind of lurching, low slung bass fuelled hip hop sound, yet only a few seem to nail it on the head and Kuedo is certainly one of them. This track epitomises everything I like about computer influenced bass music – 8 bit arcade chords, bit crushed synths & chest compressing bass drops. The beat almost seems to fold into itself & stumble back out again amid a wash of textures in a way that the likes of Slugabed & Nosaj Thing also seem to do so well. I love playing this song at Hoya & it always goes down a treat & gets a great response from the crowd. Serious reload material here.

Danny Drivethru (DDT) – Virtua Rap

Manchester local lad & a long time personal friend Danny originally created this track & it’s predecessor ‘Virtu Ante Up’ as a bit of a joke & gave it out to a few friends for a laugh. We all couldn’t get over how good it was & started playing it on the regular during our sets. Guaranteed that every time it’s played, people would ask what it was & would come over with a smile on their faces. It was obvious that he was onto a winner with the track. So many people try and create this 8 bit style & its a bit over done these days, however i think that Danny’s tongue in cheek approach to remixing 3 Hip Hop classics & banging them together in one tune really cant help but put a smile on peoples face.

I was already a big fan of the original track as well as pretty much everything i had heard from Krystal Klear, so much so that we asked him to become part of the family & become a resident at our night. So when i heard that Hudson Mohawke was due to remix ‘tried for your love’ for his 1st solo 12″, I was literally brimming with excitement. The first time i heard it was when Krystal Klear dropped it at Hoya:Hoya and as soon as the beat dropped in I ran over & wheeled it up without even knowing what it was exactly, i just knew that it blew my head off. To be honest though, its not how I would have imagined a Hud Mo / Krys K combo, in fact it was pretty far from it. However what was created was this piano mad, sax fuelled, arms in the air, 90′s house monster, which has proceeded to utterly destroy all dancefloors since its creation. The LuckyMe collective are an extended family of musicians and artists founded in Scotland, UK. Formed in the spring of 2002 they started by putting on genre bending parties at various venues firstly locally and then everywhere from London, Barcelona and NYC. We love how they combine art, visuals and music together to create a really special party vibe. Its no wonder artists such as Hudson Mohawke, American Men, Mike Slott and Rustie are on the roster.

The crew have been been good enough to put their tunes on Soundcloud to enjoy. We also have a preview of The Blessings release “Galaxy High” due out on the 16th May on Nod Navigators. To mark the announcement of the upcoming Hudson Mohawke tour I thought I would give you a taste of my favourite song from his amazing album “Butter” which we covered last year. The song “Fuse” starts with head nodding high pitched keyboards before grabbing you with some lovely breakbeats and atmospheric trills. Rumours have floated about that this may even become a single at some point. Here’s hoping!

Just as I finished the post the guys at Warp not only announced the first dates of the tour but also some lovely free downloads of the now famed Valentine Slowjam mix series and a Jodeci bootleg by Hudmo called “Freek”. Click here for more details on the tour and to download the mix.

I was sent an email about this mix from a friend of mine a few weeks back- to be honest I’d totally forgotten about it until a follow up email appeared asking me what i thought…..

So i downloaded it. And listened to it. And thought it was great.

A laid back mix of broken beat electronica IDM meets hip hop meets 80′s cheese meets Alexander O’Neal.
Featuring plenty of tracks from Letherette themselves, other notable artists include Thomas Bangalter (one half of Daft Punk), Hudson Mohawke, and Lone.

BTS Radio, who commissioned the mix, had this to say about it on their site:

The duo out of Wolverhampton may only have two official remixes to their name, the excellent reshaping of Bibio‘s “Lovers’ Carvings” and Machinedrum‘s “Late Night Operation”, but they’ve managed to make a scene shaking impression.

Born in Dublin, via Glasgow, and now living in New York, Mike Slott has just released an EP entitled “Lucky 9Teen“. Being that he’s one half of “Heralds of Change” (with Hudson Mohawke) and friends with Rustie it’s hardly suprising that his music is sort of in the same style- which some people are now calling “blip-hop”.

However, Mike Slott’s music is more relaxing on the ear. The trademark wonky beats of this genre (which sounds like the quantize function hasn’t worked properly and tends to get on my nerves after a while) are less “in yer face” than Mohawkes- but the bleepy synths are still there, along with atmospheric soundscapes.
All in all making for an interesting EP you should at least check out.

Hudson Mohawke is a highly touted hip-hop-oriented IDM producer/DJ from Glasgow, Scotland, affiliated with the LuckyMe collective.

Released at the end of October on Warp Records, “Butter” the debut album from Mohawke (real name: Ross Birchard) has been labelled by some in the music industry as “psychedelic R&B/ Hip hop”.

The BBC Music site (still in beta at present) wrote….

….he’s one of the key exponents in a new sound variously called ‘wonky’ or ‘aquacrunk’ that draws on dubstep, US hip hop and RnB, and experimental electronica, binding the fusion together with slamming, slightly out-of-phase beats and synthesisers that wobble woozily, like they’ve warped after being left out in the sun.

Even the above descriptions doesn’t cover everything that’s going on in this album!! Whatever it’s called though, i like it.

“Joy Fantastic” features Olivier Daysoul on vocal duties (who I think sounds very much like Andre 3000 on this track!!!).

This one reminds me of some of New Zealand rapper Scribe‘s music

And this one reminds me of music from Nintendo‘s excellent game F-Zero for some reason!!!
