While most labels seem happy to rest on their laurels and stick to the standard current formats of digital and vinyl, Glasgow imprint Broken20 are forever looking to expand their horizons.

The latest project to come from the mind of TVO and co is the launch of Broken60, a cassette based offshoot label and the first outing comes from 10-20 in the shape of his “Magnet Marsh” album.

Across the album’s 21 tracks, the listener is welcomed into a world of easy on the ears left of centre electronica. Sprinkling drums and percussion throughout where required, the tracks lose themselves in a sea of wonderful atmospheres where every slightly disjointed moment is balanced equally with moments of serene calm and subtlety.

When it comes to Boards Of Canada it’s more of an obsession than just liking the band. The hunt for rare tracks, demo’s and anything unreleased never stops as the chances of any new material gets slimmer and slimmer.

Then up pops +dB, a prolific user on Soundcloud who takes great pleasure in curating Dj sets and classic albums all for you to stream. What he seems to have got hold of is a collection called “A Few Old Tunes” which contains demo’s, some unreleased ideas and oddities. Apparently given as a tape to close friends it certainly makes all the right noises.

Los Angeles producer Inanna is a new name on me but this lovely slab of atmospheric goodness guarantees it’ll be one I’ll be watching out for in future.

The original is a wonderfully constructed piece of floaty electronica and almost doesn’t need any beats to drive it along. There’s also a package of remixes, the pick of which being the “Experimental mix” which brings the drums to the forefront slightly and strips back a little of the wandering sounds.

With two albums already under his belt for D Bridge’s Exit imprint in the past 12 months (one solo and one collaboration with Joe Seven as They Live), Consequence is fairly churning em out. You can rest safe in the knowledge however that quality hasn’t been sacrificed for quantity.

New album “Test Dream” is an even more accomplished project than his (admittedly brilliant) previous work and manages to swerve any simple genre pigeonholing with tracks moving between eerie ambience and melancholy downtempo to more chunky beat driven outings.

You’ll find yourself losing track of time while the album worms its way around your consciousness and it truly is a brilliant piece of work.

If you have an interest in forward thinking electronica with one eye on the past then make sure to pick this album up on it’s release on 19th December.

As the winter approaches it’s time for some darker Sunday beats. Teargas & Plateglass are a modern classical/electronic production team that we know very little about.

Their official site offers no info and their Wikipedia entry offers little.

All you need to know is that it’s some of the best and most atmospheric music created in the last 10 years and while you take in the beautiful drum work and weaving of orchestral instruments, you also feel a little on edge and disturbed at the same time. Amazing stuff.

XLR8R described their 2004 debut as “the martial sound of drums and darkness mixed thick like a pool of blood, reflecting fear and starlight in your ears”.

So aye….embrace the Sunday darkness.

Glasgow label Broken20′s fifth release has just arrived in the shape of “Dreams Torn From The Sky”. The five tracker is the label’s finest outing to date and sees Patrick Walker of Forward Strategy Group don his Isodyne alias once more.

Opening track “Burn It All To Ashes” buries some dark techno meanderings beneath a shovel full of otherworldly atmospherics and sets things up nicely.

“River of Ruin” and “Sentinel” follow and read from the same dubbed up techno blueprint with the latter taking the foot off the gas a little and allowing even more space to enter proceedings.

The final original track “Answer To No One” is up next and sees Isodyne wash away the dubbyness for a more straight down the line techy roller that does exactly what it says on the tin.

Rounding things off, Broken 20 label boss TVO drops by to turn in a nice smoky rework of “Sentinel”, upping the pace and stretching the track out to over 11 minutes of techno bliss

With a catalogue of releases that spans back to 1991, Plaid have been releasing quality electronica since before some of today’s tastemakers were even born.

Originally beginning life as an offshoot of The Black Dog, the project slowly begin to take on it’s own life and their “Rest Proof Clockwork” album from 1999 is highly regarded as one of the best electronic long players of the 90s.

Jump forward to 2011 and new album “Scintilli” has just landed, putting the duo back on top of the electronic pile with ease. Moving between deep n dark soundscapes that wander into modern classical territory to more beat driven pieces, it’s a brilliant piece of work that rewards repeated listens and unearths new layers with each play.

Everytime we record a show there’s a track which we mean to put in and just don’t quite get round to. This time it was this tasty vocal number from Blawan. We’ll call it “the one that got away”.

Bop’s debut album “Clear Your Mind” landed about a year ago and quickly cut it’s way through the bunch with it’s beautiful melodies, minimal drumwork and outstanding atmospherics working together to create a wonderful piece of work that defied easy journalistic pigeonholing and proved again that tempo does dictate style.

The follow up album “The Amazing Adventures Of One Curious Pixel” arrived this week and builds on the framework on the debut with great success. It’s familiar territory for fans of the debut but manages to maintain it’s own identity and creates a space and atmosphere of it’s very own. Various tempos are thrown into the mix and the overall picture is a brilliant album of IDM/electronica that sounds most at home on the headphones.
