As Jamie Vex’d brings the first phase of his Kuedo project for Planet Mu to a close, we’re treated to a quality EP with a couple of newies alongside some rather tasty interpretations from Clark, Illum Sphere and Heterotic. The forthcoming debut album will see the producer change style and direction slightly and this EP serves as a bookend to his first burst of solo material.

The first two EPs (“In System Travel” and “Dream Sequence”) were firm favourites here at the Labs and although we’re sad to see the producer move on, this package is a fine send off and whets the appetite nicely for the album.

Opening track “Take Off (remix)” leads us in with swirling synth work and skippy beats before we head into remix territory. Manchester’s Illum Sphere is up first with his lovely spacey rework of “Starfox”. Sphere keeps the beats to a minimum and lets the track’s rich melodies worm their way into your consciousness before some simple but effective drums appear and toughen up the track as it reaches it’s climax.

Warp Records’ Clark steps up to the oche next and turns in a moody slice of dark electronica with some beautiful piano work, distorted bass notes and jarring melodies keeping you on your toes in his “Glow” rework. Mike Paradinas follows wearing his Heterotic hat to take on “Shutter Light Girl”, coating the track in a sea of uplifting pads and a shoegaze-y style guitar lick with a stuttery break sitting low in the mix..

To finish things off we’re treated to another new Kuedo original in the shape of “Oh” and we pick up the pace a little here with mechanical drums driving the track alongside the super catchy synth hook and boat load of sub bass.

Another Saturday morning, another hangover snack to see you right. This week’s it’s Toffifee. Chocolate, caramel, toffee and a cheeky hazelnut, sorted.

Onto the tunes and to start us off this week we’ve got a freebie courtesy of DFA. The Holy Ghost album has been picking up some play around the Labs and this cracking wee remix from CFCF is right up our street, although an instrumental would be nice. Nice easy start to the snackage.

Next up we’ve got a nice freebie from 13 & God. The collaboration of The Notwist and Themselves is certainly something special and forthcoming second album “Own Your Ghost” is a must have. To entice you further, the kind folks at XLR8R have offered up this Antonionian remix of album track “It’s Own Sun” and it’s a lovely melancholy slice of electronica.

Jeroen Verheij AKA Secret Cinema has been releasing top quality electronica since the 90s and his new album “Minerals” is a bit of a belter. Spread over two very different discs with the first aiming itself firmly at the dancefloor and packed with techno goodness while the second wanders into the world of ambience.

We covered the Kuedo tune “Starfox” just over a year ago on the blog and to be honest its a little surprising that its taken so long for some remixes to emerge. Well that moment in here in the shape of Illum Sphere. Set for release at the start of June through Planet Mu.

Time for a lesser known act now with the London act Goldlines. It swept into our Soundcloud this week is all out, high pitch synth attack with a skipping beat bubbling along. Its a tune that does grabs you though, so these guys are one to keep an eye on. What’s more it a freebie. Just how we like it.

News arrived this week that New York producer Brenmar would be releasing on Sinden’s Grizzly imprint shortly. The label’s catalogue has been flawless so far and Brenmar’s addition is sure to maintain the quality with his r’n'b inspired electronica goodness. Lorn – Tomorrow

In my mind this song sounds like the end of the world happening. It conjures images of the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse bringing forth the angels of armageddon, entire cities collapse whist engulfed in flames as darkness envelopes the world & the demise of humanity unfolds……. Well maybe I have quite a warped & active imagination, but i can really feel a sense of fear, despair & hopelessness in this track. This track & the rest of the LP can stand up there with the likes of Burial’s albums, in the sense that you can listen to it and really feel & get an understanding of the artists emotions. Whereas Burial really captures that sense of longing & heartbreak, Lorn equally captures a sense of pain, anger & frustration & I think that this track pretty much reflects that really well, even in the title.

Kyle Hall – You Know What I Feel

A nice slice of Detroit Soul 2-step from the annoyingly young Kyle Hall (I say this as I wish I could have created music this educated and developed at the tender age of 18). Beautiful textured pads melt over smooth sub bass & stuttered kick patterns, whilst the song is driven by an assault of neck jerking compressed hi hats. Throw in a catchy vocoder vocal & you have a winner in my eyes. The song is so delicate & has such a lovely pace to it, it gently wraps itself around everyone in the club until people are totally absorbed into it & dancing away without even thinking about it. A real eyes closed, smiles on faces kind of track.

Kuedo – Starfox

Jamie Vex’d comes correct with some of the finest leftfield beats under his Kuedo (pronounced kudo) guise. This track is taken from the Dream Sequence EP on Planet Mu and it blew me away the first time I heard it. Many people try and create this kind of lurching, low slung bass fuelled hip hop sound, yet only a few seem to nail it on the head and Kuedo is certainly one of them. This track epitomises everything I like about computer influenced bass music – 8 bit arcade chords, bit crushed synths & chest compressing bass drops. The beat almost seems to fold into itself & stumble back out again amid a wash of textures in a way that the likes of Slugabed & Nosaj Thing also seem to do so well. I love playing this song at Hoya & it always goes down a treat & gets a great response from the crowd. Serious reload material here.

Danny Drivethru (DDT) – Virtua Rap

Manchester local lad & a long time personal friend Danny originally created this track & it’s predecessor ‘Virtu Ante Up’ as a bit of a joke & gave it out to a few friends for a laugh. We all couldn’t get over how good it was & started playing it on the regular during our sets. Guaranteed that every time it’s played, people would ask what it was & would come over with a smile on their faces. It was obvious that he was onto a winner with the track. So many people try and create this 8 bit style & its a bit over done these days, however i think that Danny’s tongue in cheek approach to remixing 3 Hip Hop classics & banging them together in one tune really cant help but put a smile on peoples face.

I was already a big fan of the original track as well as pretty much everything i had heard from Krystal Klear, so much so that we asked him to become part of the family & become a resident at our night. So when i heard that Hudson Mohawke was due to remix ‘tried for your love’ for his 1st solo 12″, I was literally brimming with excitement. The first time i heard it was when Krystal Klear dropped it at Hoya:Hoya and as soon as the beat dropped in I ran over & wheeled it up without even knowing what it was exactly, i just knew that it blew my head off. To be honest though, its not how I would have imagined a Hud Mo / Krys K combo, in fact it was pretty far from it. However what was created was this piano mad, sax fuelled, arms in the air, 90′s house monster, which has proceeded to utterly destroy all dancefloors since its creation. One of the club nights that has been putting on the best parties around recently is Hoya Hoya coming out of Manchester. Upfront guests, amazing residents and an atmosphere and music policy most nights would die for. Now comes the label, which was the logical move given the talent at their disposal. We were delighted to receive the first EP through our inbox and weren’t disappointed.

As with the club itself, started by Jonny Dub and Illum Sphere, the EP and a nice variation of styles with the distorted house vibe of Lone, to the slightly slower pace and deep vibe of Illum Sphere before getting boogie king Krystal Klear does what he does best. With more bombs in the pipeline Hoya Hoya is going to be one to watch in 2011. You can pick this up on all formats at Boomkat.

The second 12″ of remixes from Martyn’s phenomenal “Great Lengths” album (the first installment featured remixes from Zomby and Redshape) sees Ben Klock and Illum Sphere get their hands on Martyn’s work.

Ben Klock’s remix of “Is This Insanity” is a driving dubby techno number that surrounds you and batters you round the head in a nice subtle way. Stripping away the tribal vibe of the original and replacing it with a sense of paranoia and danger, it’s brilliant stuff but could really benefit with an instrumental version (never been a fan of Spaceape).

On the flip, Illum Sphere takes on “Brilliant Orange”. The original was a lovely short n snappy ambient burst and the Manchester producer has thrown in some skippy beats that unsettle as they seem to fall over each other and slip out of sync with the edgey pads and atmospherics floating around on top.
