While the biggest tune that usually comes to mind when mentioning Joey Beltram is the mighty “Mentasm”, this under-rated rave number on R&S is one of my favourites from his impressive back catalogue.

The tune drops about 20 seconds in and from then on it’s full pelt all the way. Chunky rave synths dominate the frequencies and the rest of the track isn’t messing about either.

Originally released in 1991 but you can still snap it up on vinyl at the R&S shop.

Beltram & Program 2 – The Omen (After Life mix)

As we continue to celebrate to the resurgence of R&S Records this week, it seems only appropriate that we give them another classic slot for the weekend wind up.

“Mentasm” by Second Phase is a classic chunk of rave with all the elements that kept those arms flailing and UV jackets swinging. Under this moniker, 2 heavy weights in Joey Beltram & Mundo Muzique came together to write what was considered one the the standout tunes of 1991.

They also employed the famous “hoover” preset on the Roland Alpha Juno.

This week I’m cooking up a tasty crown of lamb and we’ve got some top quality tunage to aid digestion.

First up is Doorly’s cracking remix of The Melvins. To be honest I could hardly imagine two more different artists but the resulting melee is a brilliant tribal dubstep number utilising the guitar and vocal pieces sparingly throughout. It comes as part of a free remix pack featuring reworks from Lovelock, MRK1 and J Phlip.

Next up, proceedings take a bit of a darker turn with techno legend Joey Beltram. This brilliant remix of “Utopian Societies” is out now as part of a remix package of tracks from Umek’s debut album “Responding to Dynamic” and Beltram’s is the pick of the bunch. Moody techno goodness from one of the masters of the genre. Available now at Beatport.

Lastly we have Huess. A name new to the UK beat scene. While information is limited, what we do know is that his tunes are on the button. With a new free EP which you can pick up here, we have picked the title track to get you interested. LoFi, off beat, leftfield and just plain great. There is also more on the way on label Inaudible Answer. We can’t wait.

Heuss – Broke

Lots of 2010 updated working their way onto the Phuturelabs headphones at the moment!

After the brilliant remixes of Yello, it’s time for Joey Beltram’s 2001 track “Slice” to get an update. The original was a cracking wee techno number with a bassline reminiscent of “I Feel Love” and the first remix from Carl Cox doesn’t wander too far from the original, simply beefing up the sounds in a “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” stylee. Alan Fitzpatrick steps up next and retains the vocal hook of the original but sprinkles a touch of darkness over proceedings – turning the track into a moody techno rumbler. Joseph Capriati’s remix finishes off the package and while he does a good job – it’s the first two remixes that tickled my fancy.
