A new release from Joy Orbison is a fairly hallowed event here at the Labs and they just seem to be getting better and better. At this rate he’ll have produced the modern day of equivalent of “Innervisions” by the end of the year.

He first came to prominence with the mighty “Hyph Mngo” and for this release he’s once again teamed up with the folk at Hotflush. “Wade In” opens the release with an almighty bang as the kick drum wanders in sounding like somebody smacking a bin lid with a stick and before you know it, creepy atmospherics follow behind with a simple but hugely effective old skool house style loop building throughout.

The real treat however is “Jels” on the flip. Easing itself into your ears with ethereal atmospherics and a slowly building 303 hook, it’s a bit of a builder that constantly repays the listener’s patience throughout.

1. Harmonic 313 feat. Wiley – Scar

This song is just so good. That bassline is just so perfect and Wiley is as reliable as ever. I’m hoping grime will replace brostep as the aggro music of choice on dancefloors in 2011.

2. Hot City – Another Girl

Big obvious tune – the type of thing some producers would slag off then secretly try to recreate. It just bursts out of the speakers.

3. Joy Orbison – Ladywell

Joy Orbison in good tune non-shocker! Not much like his old stuff but every bit as good.

4. James Blake – Postpone

Beautiful tune. Some day everybody’s going to realise James Blake doesn’t make dance music, but until that point, fill yer boots!

5. Rusko – Woo Boost (subskrpt edit)

A Rusko song, oh no! The original is just plod-plod-plod but this mix really bounces – it’s a good brash counterpoint to Another Girl.

6. MJ Cole – Thekla Rhythm

This whole release is great, but this track, of sharp rhythms and techno sounds, is the pick of the litter.

7. Jacques Greene – (Baby I Don’t Know) What You Want

Jacques Greene might be Montreal’s best producer and this is probably his best track. I just wish he’d play some gigs in Montreal as Jacques Greene instead of – or in addition to – his other names.

8. Skinny Bones – Road to Axum

Skinnybones is part of Montreal’s ESL Collective. I once asked ESL’s Bowly what Skinnybones’ productions were like and he said “Percussive!” I said “Can you be more specific?” and he replied “No!”. I laughed and asked the man himself what his own stuff was like and he gave the same answer. It’s the right answer, incidentally. Nobody sounds like this guy.

9. Ramadanman – Tempest

Rama’s productions are the perfect balance of eccentric and dancefloor, and this one has just the right balance of floaty, atmospheric bits and bumping drums.

10. Seiji – Straylight

He was good in Bugz In The Attic and he’s great here. So perfectly staccato – stiff yet fluid.

Joy Orbison’s been keeping us waiting for some new material and this second release on his own Doldrums imprint sees him deliver two of his finest moments to date.

Both tracks follow a more straightforward house path than previous material but are awash with his trademark atmospherics and melodies. “BB” opens the 12 and a pitched down spoken sample leads us willingly into jackin’ 4/4 territory with a hint of a chicago house vibe. “Ladywell” on the flip takes a slightly more laid back approach with squelchy funk synths wandering over a classic house style vocal snippet.

George Fitzgerald – The Let Down EP

Just short of a year after having a track on a Scuba mix, George Fitzgerald get his first release on the Hotflush 2 imprint with “The Let Down”. On offer are dubtech grooves and future garage beats that will draw comparisons with luminaries such as Joy Orbison. Don’t be fooled though as this lacks nothing in the quality department, so much so that Mr Orbison has signed two releases for Doldrums. Get this now at Boomkat.

New material from Joy Orbison always gets us a little hot under the collar, factor in that he’s remixing Todd Edwards and we’re pretty much sweating as soon as we press play. Taking the auto tuned vox of the original and sprinkling them over a beautiful wee slice of garagey house before coating it in the usual Joy Orbison warmth.

MJ Cole, Feadz and My Dear Disco also chip in remixes but fail to come close to the Joy Orbison goodness.

Joy Orbison – The Shrew Would Have Cushioned The Blow

If the dark and gloomy winter mornings are getting you down then a new release by Joy Orbison on Aus Music is sure to put a wee spring in your step. “The Shrew Would Have Cushioned The Blow” wanders down familiar paths for the 22 year old Londoner with his trademark crystal clear production, warm as you like pads, haunting female vocal snippet and head nodding garagey beats. “So Derobe” on the flip adds more clunky, mechanical beats to proceedings but retains the Orbison gloss.

Once you’ve taken in all the new Orbison loveliness on the a-side, flip the 12″ over for an Actress remix of “The Shrew” which strips the track back a little, roughens it up around the edges a little and spits out a chunky slice of house.

Joy Orbison first popped up with the brilliant uk garagey meets downtempo breaks via dubstep vibes of Hyph Mngo on Hotflush and it brought him to the attention of many – including Mary Anne Hobbs who asked him in for a wee guest mix on her Radio 1 show. Just incase you were on another planet at the time here it is:
