It’s fair to say we give the Numbers label a lot of coverage here at the Labs. It’s not because they are from Glasgow or that we run into them on a regular basis, it’s the fact that they release top quality material from both new and established producers.

Its looks like 2011 is going to be a massive year for the crew with releases from the likes of Deadboy and Redinho as well as legends DJ Pierre and Lory D.

Next to join the list is Mosca, who if you haven’t seen him DJ before is a very bad man! His DJ sets pull in influences from lots of different genres and this is also reflected in his production style and his use of samples. He loves the garage vibe as well as nice 4/4 beats which is what he delivers on the “Done Me Wrong/Bax” EP.

Released mid September on all formats, get jacking to the samples below and get ready.

To say this release came out of the blue would be an understatement! After the release of their last EP by Jamie XX, the Numbers crew have made one of the moves of 2011 and re-released the 1987 DJ Pierre classic “Mystery Girl”.

This tune has been a firm favourite with the Numbers faithful since its genesis and to help spice the release up they have called on Seiji to rework to original (without any parts or stems).

Available now digitally with vinyl to follow shortly at Boomkat, the mean time bathe in the majesty of the Chi Town classic below.

It goes without saying that Jamie XX is one of the hottest producers in electronic music today. From his Mercury Music prize winning work on the debut album from The XX through to his amazing work with the late, great Gil Scott-Heron on We’re New Here.

He’s also been working on solo material and the first outing has arrived on the mighty Numbers. The track first popped up in DJ sets over a year ago and the wait for release is finally over. Lead track “Far Nearer” makes beautiful use of steel drums which give an even more emotional depth to Jamie’s normal high production values. “Beat For” is packed with haunting synths and eery echos before the sub and vocal sample arrives.

Both tracks are a must have and are available now on 12″ and digital download.

After a relatively quiet time over the Xmas period the Numbers crew have had an explosion of activity recently. With the Redinho and Deadboy EP’s due to drop any time now and Jackmaster’s Fabric mix CD about to land. No time for any breathers however as Lory D steps up next.

A firm favourite in Glasgow, Lory D first played here at a now infamous gig at Club 69 in 2003. This is partly where the Numbers concept was born amongst the 303 and 909 acid breaks that only the man from Rome can produce.

The EP is a monster from start to finish and should be played as loud as possible with a strobe on full pelt if you have one handy. Released on the 23rd of May.

Lory D – Strange Days Vol 1 (Preview clips of NMBRS13) by Numbers

With the Numbers crew just back from their month long tour of the US taking clubs like Low End Theory and TURRBOTAX® by storm you would think they would be having a rest on the EP front. Not so for the Glasgow juggernaut with the release of a new Redinho EP hot on the heels of the Deadboy release that’s about to drop.

Tile track “Edge Off”, a surprising monster of a funk electro boogie track makes big start to the EP. We then get into more familiar beats and blips territory with the track “Slap” before the last track “Whips” up the pace and drives hard to the end.

Deadboy is back with the “Here EP”, his long awaited new release on his spiritual home Numbers. While he has been busy touring all over the world, these tunes have been bubbling under in the Serato crates of the most in the know DJ’s.

There are the usual warm, welcoming percussive sounds and vocal slithers that we all love but title track “Wish You Were Here” makes a very large nod to disco and house. “All Here 4U” returns to normal funky territory, broken up by a hypnotic house synth line that’s bound to make you throw some shapes. “Ain’t Gonna Lie” closes the EP and is darker and more atmospheric with a shuffling garage underbelly.

2011 starts with a bang as Numbers, one of our favourite labels of last year, unleash Ill Blu’s “Meltdown” EP. With “Bellion” bringing Ill Blu to our attention we were waiting eagerly to hear what was next.

It’s all out pads and synth attack behind a murmuring 2 step snare shuffle that starts the EP off and the pace barely stops. Some high pitched strings are laced into the tracks amongst epic moments of calm. It’s then back to getting face first in the dirt again. Pick this quality platter up at Rubadub on 12″ from the 14th February. A perfect valentine gift!

Ill Blu – Meltdown EP (3 Track Sampler) by Numbers

Hot on the heals of the Jessie Ware and SBTRKT release, Numbers have this pseudo house monster coming fast on the outside lane. SLACKK brings us three dark and upfront tracks which cross various genre borders to produce a tribal like feel. We may also have a new genre in there with his self titled “Eski-House”, which is a tribute to Wiley. We have clips for all these bombs below with the whole EP becoming available on the 29th November on all formats.

More heat out of Glasgow comes as the much anticipated release by Taz get an airing before its 15th November release. Many of the tracks on the EP have been getting played since last summer with fans eager to get the 12″ in their collections. Well the time is nearly here as Numbers deliver the goods and Taz unleashes this four track monster.

Title track “Gold Tooth Grin” is a stuttering synth monster for all the head rockers out there. “Robogrime” will be less familiar to fans but is bound to become a favourite with its pseudo 8 Bit, steroid fuelled riddims. We also have a clip of “Strike First” where Taz goes back to his grime and DnB roots. Large and heavy! Avoid buying this at your pearl.

We have long been big fans of the enigmatic London producer SBTRKT on the blog and when his latest EP “Step in Shadows” hit our computers we were getting maybe just too excited. He is no doubt one of the most talented electronic music producers of the last 18 months with releases on Young Turks, Ramp and forthcoming on Numbers under his belt. Never tied to a certain style of music, you’re not sure what to expect.

What he has supplied this time round is his most mature and varied work to date. Slightly less leaning towards the underground as some of his previous EP’s, “Step in Shadows” tips it’s hat towards house, progressive, garage, funky and techno. Proof, not that we needed it, that his album will be something very special.

Every track on this platter oozes quality. The two stand out tracks for us are “Hide or Seek” with its dark shuffling moody start, breaking into a blissful string section sure to get hands aloft before dropping back into the hats and “Look at the Stars”, possible the most commercial piece, has a real a progressive feel and wonderful crisp vocal and vibrato synth stabs. This monster is due out on the 1st November on Young Turks.
