R&S was originally founded way back in 1984 and continues to this day to release exciting new electronica.

While their back catalogue is absolutely packed with anthems, Radio Scorpio invited label founder Renaat Vandepapeliere to put together a mix of his favourites from the label’s ’90s output.

Luke Vibert last donned the Plug alias for the brilliant “Drum n Bass For Papa” album in 1996 and Ninja Tune have just unearthed a treasure trove of unreleased material from that time.

Time has been kind to the material and the label have gathered the goodies together for an album entitled “Back On Time”, set for release on January 9th.

“Feeling So Special” has been unleashed to whet the appetite and it’s a classy slab of old skool dnb that still sounds better than the majority of the genre’s output of the last 10 years.

Plug – Feeling So Special

Zomby’s signing to legendary indie label 4AD came as a bit of a surprise but the album that followed (“Dedication”) was a joy to behold and is sure to be in many’s end of year charts.

Now, as a wee added bonus, there’s an EP of tracks from the same studio sessions as the album set for release on 28th of November.

Keeping things short and snappy with a running time of just over 20 minutes, the EP covers Zomby’s love for old skool breakbeats in “Labyrinth”, “Sens” and “Ecstacy Versions” while sprinkling some dubstep goodness and 4/4 driven electronica in others such as “Equinox” and “It Was All A Dream”.

As always, the production is flawless and the material will have a use for Dj’s and home listeners alike.

Good Looking are responsible for some of the finest moments in drum n bass history and this atmospheric roller from 93 is up there with the best.

As with all the best tunes from the era, it’s simple but hugely effective, combining otherworldly atmospherics and pads with a tough rollin’ amen and a wall of sub bass.

Originally released as Tayla with Bukem getting production credits and later re-released as LTJ Bukem & Tayla.

We’ve previously covered 4 Hero’s downtempo material in the Classics section of the site and today we’re taking a trip back to 1991 with this breakbeat classic from the duo.

Kicking off with the creepy “your son is dead” sample and throwing ravey stabs over some classic breaks and a big truck full of sub bass, it’s an anthem that’s stood the test of time nicely.

Originally released on the “Combat Dancin” EP on Reinforced the track has seen many many remixes over the years – none of which have ever really come close to capturing the magic of the original.

As we continue our dive into the Soma back catalogue, today we go right back to 1991 and the label’s very first release – Slam’s “Eterna”.

With the 20th birthday celebrations now in full swing and a forthcoming special event at the Arches on the 30th Sept, now seems the perfect time to take a look at where it all began.

With progressive house about to blow up at the start of the 90s’, Slam and the likes of Guerilla Records were key in the genre’s development and “Eterna” is definitely a classic example.

Altern-8 are another production duo that we could fill up a year’s worth of classics posts about, today however we’re focusing on “Shame”, the piano rave monster featuring Evelyn “Champagne” King from 1992.

Wasting no time, the track intros with the huge piano line and vocal hook before heading into rave territory with a huge synth hook and a 303 line to die for. An absolute classic and when the track breaks down for the second time it’s sure to send a shiver up even the coldest of spines.

Let’s face it, we’re all getting on a bit and as we all join the dad club, it’s nice to know that folks like Techno Dads are out there to help us make the transition from dancefloor madness to pipe and slippers mode.

The Dad Casts podcast series features a selection of Djs from the dad club playing all manner of genres (Vol 3 is a fave of mine – nice dark old skool breakbeat) and the latest is courtesy of Hector Ruiez – one half of Glasgow electronica production team Stick 430.
