Having said goodbye to the good old Roast, we move things on for our Sunday feature and bring you Lazy Sundays. It’s aim is to relax and chill you out after the rigors of a hard week at work and hopefully a busy weekend on the dancefloor. We will bring you the best new electronica and ambient tunes as well as allowing us to delve into some older tracks and hidden album classics from time gone by.

First up we have oOoOO and a remix of the Marina and the Diamonds tune “Obsessions”. The San Fran leaders of the “witch house” sound turn this pop tune into a brooding, emotional slice of electronica. So much better than the original we think!

Marina and the Diamonds – Obsessions (oOoOO Remix)

Next we have Telefon Tel Aviv. After the tragic passing of one half of the duo (Charlie Cooper) last year no one was sure if the name would continue. It wasn’t until Apparat was putting together his DJ Kicks for !K7 that Joshua Eustis decided to make the track “Lengthening Shadows” for the mix. The song is so poignant one can’t helped be moved by the story and the subtle emotion held within.

Telefon Tel Aviv – Lengthening Shadows

Finishing up this week’s offerings we’ve got a freebie from Glasgow producer Velocet. Packed to the brim with atmosphere, it’s 7 minutes of lovely downtempo beats with beautiful strings a-plenty.

While taking one of my all too frequent trips on the nostalgia bus, Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy’s album “Hypocrisy is the Greatest Luxury” is often the soundtrack.
It’s release in 1992 had a huge impact on me as an impressionable 15 year old and alongside bands like The 25th of May and Marxman fed my hunger for politically conscious music.

“Television, The Drug of the Nation” was the first single from the album and despite the fact that it’s sometimes a bit clunky lyrically, it’s an absolutely brilliant tirade against the mindlessness of television and the generation embracing it, all wrapped up in an industrial edged hip hop soundtrack.

The band later went on to record “Spare Ass Annie and Other Tales” with William S. Burroughs and then called it a day – frontman Michael Franti forming Spearhead, focusing more on funk and soul and sharpening his song writing and vocal skills but as if often the case, sharpening the edges off in the process.
