Engineers Without Fears – Spiritual Aura
The term “intelligent drum n bass” isn’t one that really ever stuck with me, finding one form of music more intelligent than another being slightly baffling. One track however that fell under the journalist’s banner and shaped my listening tastes in the early 90′s was the amazing “Spiritual Aura” by Engineers Without Fear.
Dj Rap & Aston are the people behind the name and this track often appears wrongly credited to solely Rap. To ignore Aston’s influence is a mistake however as he’d already proven his skill behind the mixing desk without numerous big tunes around the same time and later went on to become part of The Freestylers.
Opening with spooky pads and atmospherics before a simple but boomy bass line adds weight beneath the choppy breaks, this is a total classic from the era that has more than stood the test of time.
Released in 1994 on Dee Jay Recordings and subsequently reissued in 2007.
