Lazy Sundays: Sasha & John Digweed – Northern Exposure
In the what now seems like the distant past of the early and mid ’90s, the electronic music scene had grown for underground parties in cities throughout the UK, through raves in fields and was fast becoming a more mainstream affair. There was money to be made and stars to be born.
Both clubs and DJs were starting to realise the massive potential of releasing mix CD’s either by clubs and also by what were fast becoming world famous DJ’s. One such partnership seemed to rules the ’90s as their heady blend of house, progressive and trance seemed to capture a moment and turn it into music with mass appeal.
Sasha and John Digweed started playing together at seminal night Renaissance in Mansfield and in 1994 released a triple CD collection named after the club that still stands up well today. It was 2 year later, however that possibly their finest CD came in the form of Northern Exposure.
A masterpiece of both track selection and mixing skill, it could be played for any mood and the sounds swept through the speakers to create an amazing soundscape. North features otherworldly tunes by Future Sound of London, Morgan King, Rabbit in the Moon and William Orbit. South on the other hand plumped for a more upbeat mood with Dope on Plastic, Pete Lazonby, The Light and Underworld. “Back in the day” this CD was played on an almost daily basis and is always worth another spin.
