Reprazent’s debut album “New Forms” was one of the first albums to give drum n bass the mass credibility and media coverage that it deserved and Magnetic Man’s debut is set to do the same for dubstep. While obviously completely different style wise, the Magnetic Man album has the same air of class – switching easily between more radio friendly beats and deep n dark underground rumblings. Guest vocalists include the lady of moment – Katy B alongside more established names such as John Legend but the production dream team of Skream, Benga and Artwork are more than capable of holding their own without a frontperson.
The album starts and finishes on a slightly chilled tip but the rest of the 50 odd minutes are aimed firmly at the dancefloor with each track being packed to the brim with hooks a-plenty and enough sub bass to sink the Titanic, there is the odd breather in the shape of tracks such as “Box of Ghosts” but before you know it the big bass noises are back and we’re back in dancefloor land with “Karma Crazy”. The overall production is amazing and each track has that high quality sheen that you’d expect from such a skilled production team.
Magnetic Man are sure to take the world of dubstep to the next level with some serious commercial success but their debut album has enough quirky moments to keep even the most die hard of fans happy. I think this will be a serious contender for next year’s Mercury Music Prize.
Unfortunately we’re not allowed to put up any audio clips of tracks so all that’s left to say is that this album is an absolute must have for anyone with an interest in quality electronic music. Released on 11th October and available to pre-order now at Amazon
and HMV. Oh and here’s a teaser for the aforementioned “Karma Crazy”.
Next single “Perfect Stranger” lands soon and is one of the album’s stand out tracks, it also has a nifty wee promo clip below and you can head on over to Magnetic Man’s YouTube page for more of the same:
(apologies for the advert before the clip but the YouTube version of the video isn’t embeddable as yet)
And if that wasn’t enough – the single even comes with an absolutely cracking Benga remix to boot!
