Glasgow-based label Dixon Avenue Basement Jams keep the pace up with this second offering of 2013, a new four track EP release from mysterious producer Marquis Hawkes.
Taking a fundamentally house production approach to the release as a whole, each track takes its own identity, drawing flavours from chicago house through to tech-house.
The title track, ‘Higher Forces At Work’, suitably sets the tone, utilising a simple 4/4 structure and layering some interesting vocal samples over the top of energetic percussion.
The EP takes a darker form as the release progresses, with ‘Automatic’ bringing in more minimal, stripped back approach and a standout, throbbing bassline that drives the track.
‘I Want You’ takes a much more contemporary feel, with choppy female vocal cuts over this equally energetic track, taking a similar aesthetic to the title track but with more bounce.
The EP is rounded off with ‘Divine Intervention’ – an acid driven track, countering its soulful predecessor.
Marquis Hawkes’s Higher Forces At Work drops on March 5th and you can pre-order the 12″ now from Juno.
