Mount Kimbie’s debut album “Crooks and Lovers” was without a doubt one of 2010′s best and quickly turned the London duo into one of electronic music’s hottest properties.
Jump forward however and its follow up “Cold Spring Fault Less Youth” unfortunately never quite clicked for me, I just felt the vocals didn’t work very well and while I never expected a straight up rehash of their debut, their movement forward wasn’t to my tastes. Will this new remix EP change my mind?
The King Crule vocal-led “You Took Your Time” gets three reworkings here with Oneman, Kyle Hall and Lee Gamble all taking a pop at it. It’s Gamble’s that stands out however with its melancholy techno lean and heavily stripped back and pitched down vocal snippets.
As a wee bonus, DJ Koze wanders along and offers up his rather impressive remix of “Made To Stray” and turns in an early morning slab of airy house. Lovely stuff.
Now I’m thinking maybe it’s time to go back to “Cold Spring Fault Less Youth” for another listen…
