Production Unit – There Are No Shortcuts In A Grid System

With a background of releasing material that often wanders far left of centre, it would be foolish to think that Glasgow’s Production Unit would produce a debut album that follows any preconceived ideas that may have formed.

The “Bridge” and “ICU Tracks” EP offered up delights that both pleased the ears and tossed genre boundaries into the bin, “There Are No Shortcuts In A Grid System” takes things a step further.

Originally planned for tape release (PU runs the cassette-based Broken60 imprint), this is a long-player designed to be listened to without break as each second slowly unveils another piece of the entire jigsaw with each track being a remix of the one that preceeded it.

From the chugging techno of “Third Step” and its siblings via the airy hip hop of “The Next Ish” through to the robotic synth meanderings of “No Grip Perhaps” you’re gripped throughout and by the time we reach the penultimate track “Nothing is True”, it feels like we’ve gone full circle with elements of “Third Step” re-appearing.

A full stop is then added to proceedings with closer “Everything Is Permitted” recalling the spoken numbers of the opening track.

It’s an amazing piece of work that manages to maintain a haunting feel through every second of its running time and has the hallmarks of a classic.

You can pick this up from the 19th of November at Boomkat and as a limited edition USB stick with art prints etc from the Broken20 store on the same date.
