Underworld – Mmm Skyscraper I Love You
With Underworld’s new album “Barking” just around the corner, I thought it’d be a good time to listen back to them at their very very best. This is, without a doubt, their finest moment and although the material that followed it was good, it never came close to capturing the magic of “Mmm Skyscraper I Love You”.
The track takes everything that was great about the trio of Darren Emerson, Karl Hyde and Rick Smith and wrapping it up in one 13 minute long bundle of house goodness. With Hyde’s improvisational lyrics spread throughout, it builds and builds throughout with catchy synth hooks worming their way around a simple yet brilliant bassline. Then just when you least expect it – 10 minutes in, everything changes.

Gotta say I’ve always been more of a Cowgirl man myself. Goes down particularly well with a bit of Rez:

Thank you for posting this absolute classic. I purchased the dubnobass album on cassette in 1996 and played it out till it got ripped!!
This track epitomizes everything that was great with the Underworld of old (with Darren Emerson). The extended atmospheric tribal beats, Karl’s vocal just purging out stream-of-consciousness words and the occasional ambient reprises.
IMHO dubnobassswithmyheadman is still their best.. if not one of the classics of the genre. Music for future made yesterday.
Oh yeah, stumbled upon this blog by accident. Loving it! Peace.
